Playing a DVD Using the PC and LCD projector

In classrooms with PCs and LCD projectors, you can use this equipment to play a DVD and project the image onto the projection screen mounted over the blackboard.

Playing a DVD using Windows Media Player

  1. Turn on the PC and the LCD Projector (for detailed instructions on using this equipment, click on the corresponding icon for this classroom on the Classroom Resources main page).
  2. Insert the DVD into the CD drive on the computer.
  3. Windows Media Player may launch automatically depending on whether or not it has been set as the default for the PC you are using. If it does not, you may be prompted to select either Windows Media Player or RealOne Player to view the DVD. Select Windows Media Player. You can also open Windows Media Player either by double-clicking on the shortcut icon on the desktop or by left clicking on Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Windows Media Player.
  4. The tab on the upper right of the Windows Media player screen should read either DVD or Unknown DVD. Click on this tab to launch the DVD.
  5. Once the menu for the DVD loads, use the mouse to click on the selection you wish to play.
  6. Select View > Full Screen from the menu bar at the top of the screen to hide the Windows Media Player menus. To return to the Windows Media Player menus, either left click on the shortcut button on the bottom right of the screen (this is the button on the right above the time code clock) or right click on the image and select Exit Full Screen from the drop-down menu.
  7. Use the Pause, Stop, Next, Previous, Rewind and Fast-Forward buttons on the task bar at the bottom of the screen just as you would use them on a DVD player. (Left click on the button corresponding to the action you wish to perform).
  8. Use the volume controls on the PC speakers to raise or lower the volume.
  9. When you are finished, exit the Full Screen mode. Exit Windows Media Player (by clicking on the X at the top right of the screen) and eject your DVD from the CD drive using the eject button on the CPU tower.
