CCRI receives funds from the state budget; why does the college
need private gifts?
- The state of Rhode Island contributes just 50 percent of
CCRI’s operating budget, compared with 64 percent a decade ago.
To help make up this shortfall, CCRI has increased tuition fees
an average of 7.8 percent each year over the past five years.
These increases have made it more challenging for students with
limited financial resources to pursue higher education at CCRI.
In 2008-09, CCRI experienced a $5.5 million shortfall due to reduced funding from the state. By again increasing tuition, the college accounted for $2.9 million of the shortfall. To further make up the difference, the college is not filling 100 vacant positions, which impacts the overall service we are able to provide across all departments.

- Why is CCRI
launching a campaign now?
- In comparison to other colleges and universities in Rhode Island, CCRI has the shortest history. We opened our doors in 1964 with a mission to provide a high quality education at an affordable price. To accommodate a growing enrollment and to maintain a competitive edge in its offerings and facilities, the college must focus on adding substantially to its endowments that support students, faculty, academic programs, its libraries and athletic programs, which are critical to our long-term growth and reputation.
-
Will a gift to the Annual Fund be considered part of the campaign?
- Yes. Annual giving supports student programs and unexpected institutional needs.
-
Will other gifts to CCRI be included in the campaign?
- Yes. All gifts, whether they are designated by donors for support of academic programs, technology, athletics or student affairs, will be included.
- What is the
duration of the campaign?
- CCRI is currently soliciting leadership gifts for the campaign, which is scheduled to conclude in 2011.
