| 1. Minutes from 8/28. | Approved | |
| 2. Request for additions to the agenda | No new items were added. | |
| 3. Report from Jeanette Matrone on the 8th quarterly report. | Jeanette explained that she has just completed the 2nd grant year, the 8th quarter and that the Quarterly Progress report is to be sent out shortly. | |
| 4. Report to Department of Labor (DOL) for Year 2 | Diane LaBrie, Data Manager for the grant, explained the Year 2 outcomes that were required
then reported the accumulated data to date. Paula Viau suggested that perhaps in the final report Diane could compare the CCRI data to state and national averages. Jeanette mentioned the success of the peer tutor program. These are student volunteers who have a minimum of a B+ in the area in which they are tutoring. | 5. Subcommittee | Jeanette reported that she held a meeting with Lynn Dunphy, Pam McCue, Marilyn Horan, and Dean
McGarry to discuss the idea of having an Education Summit to discuss improving clinical learning as well as the experiences of
student nurses. She plans to have the next meeting on November 16. Jeanette urged all on the Advisory Committee to come up with
ideas for the Education Summit. Paula Viau asked if this idea was not redundant because of Judy Murphy's (RISNA) Nursing Education Council. |
A suggestion was made to create a Center
of Excellence for Nursing. Jeanette said she spoke with Judy and agreed that the goals would not overlap. |
| 6. Report from Dean McGarry | Maureen McGarry reported on the National League for Nursing Summit she attended where the subject was
discussed of the appropriate capacity for CCRI now and in the future. She said that Paulette Osterman and Jean McCall will be giving an
executive summary of the meeting. Jeanette asked the Dean if she could have something oral for Professional Development Day in March.
The Dean said she could do this and that she will be submitting a summary report of the Summit in a month or so. The Dean made a plea for Adjunct Faculty, citing the shortage that exists and promises not to be relieved without help. |
|
| 7. Student Success: outcomes of the grant to date | Diane LaBrie outlined the data that she has accumulated to date on the Student Success Center. | |
| 8. Mentoring | Jeanette Matrone reported that Marie Martone, a Health Science Coordinator, has expanded the mentoring program for students covered under the scope of the grant. Jeanette said that Marie has successfully paired 20 mentors/mentees and that these pairs are located in the health care organizations as well as the college. Jeanette explained the difference between mentoring and academic assistance. | |
| 9. Adjunct Instructors from Lifespan; explore options for more. | Jeanette Matrone reported that there have been four Adjunct Instructors successfully recruited
from Lifespan. She plans to speak with them and said that things have started out very positive. A more formal evaluation will be forthcoming. Regarding the shortage of Adjunct Instructors, Dean McGarry said that she asked Margaret Clifton to identify the needs for Adjunct Instructors. Mike Paruta asked if all staff positions at CCRI are full. Dean McGarry responded that there are still 4 or 5 vacancies, plus illness and sabbaticals to be covered. |
|
| 10. SNAP update | Jeanette went over the information that Michael Cunningham left for the group, a First Term Analysis and Recommendations of the SNAP.
Jeanette mentioned some of the problems that have existed with the Supplemental Instructor program. She reported that there were 2,373 hours of Supplemental Instruction since the grant began. Jay Spitulnik from Lifespan suggested adding work obligations to the list of scheduling concerns. Dr. Jose Gonsalez asked if we should not make Supplemental Instruction mandatory for those who need it. Jeanette explained that there is a procedure currently in place to identify these students in order to discuss Supplemental Instruction but mandatory supplemental instruction is not an option for adults. |
|
| 11. Ideas generated from the group; Best Practices | Mike Paruta suggested creating a Providence Welcome Back Center, modeled after a similar one in Boston, where immigrant professionals can come to learn our culture and our language in order to sustain their careers after immigrating. He suggested having it at Dorcus Place because of its nature. |
The next meeting will be held on December 18 at 8:00am in the Rear Faculty Dining Room on the Flanagan Campus.
