Governance Committee Minutes
CCRI’s 2004 re-accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges recommends that CCRI adopt a governance system "that supports regularized College communication and operation" and that the system of governance implemented "be advisory to the President."
In order to accomplish this major initiative; President Sepe sent a Memorandum inviting folks to be a part of developing a governance system for the College by serving on an Ad-hoc committee.
The Committee was appointed and has met five times in 2005 (March 31, April 19, May 23, June 20, and July 25). Minutes of each committee meeting will be available on the website by the middle of August.
First Meeting
President Sepe convened the governance task force and reviewed what is expected from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and what he would expect. President Sepe indicated that the college governance process provides a vehicle for open communication, problem-solving and decision making, new programs and ideas, and policy development. This process serves faculty, staff, administration, and students by fostering collaboration across departments and divisions. Governance provides organizational structure, including committees, as well as a framework for the way these structures interact in a cohesive and systematic way.
President Sepe also indicated that an effective governance model is:
Democratic in design and operation
Representational of all college employees and students
Respecting and valuing of the free expression of differing ideas and opinions
Supportive of the discussion of ideas and issues both at the local campus and the college wide level
Clearly understood by the college community
Periodically assessed and strengthened
Our Charge
Review a representative sample of governance models of peer institutions and other institutions identified as having "best practices"
Review, update, and analyze CCRI’s existing committee structure relative to current and projected needs
Conduct outreach activities to employees and students to gain an understanding of institutional interests and needs that would be best served by a governance model.
Produce a report describing the organization, functions, membership, and basic operational procedures of a governance model that meets the above objectives and characteristics
Plan
We scheduled our next meeting. Tri chairs were selected and conversation began on what governance is, how we will begin to gather information and develop a model for CCRI to implement
Select peer institutions to review their model and find what would apply to CCRI
Obtain a listing from Personnel of all College employees
Utilize opening day as a venue to recruit members
Create a Governance website that will have all meeting minutes as well as a draft of a proposed governance model
Solicit feedback from the College community
