Revenue History:  Paul Leclerc, Assistant Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Social Sciences, endowed the Scholarship in September 2002. It is in memory of his mother Clara Leclerc (1917-2002).

Clara deserves honor because she possessed, updating Aristotle’s ancient concept, “greatness of soul” (Greek, megalopsuchia). Or, consistent with the theme of a CCRI Foundation series, because she exemplified the “indomitable spirit.” In particular, Clara embodied admirable qualities that inspired me as a young philosophy student striving for personal and professional excellence. Her authenticity taught me the transforming power of being true to others and myself. Clara was guileless and consistently acted according to conviction and principle. She was a model of personal integrity and credibility. Her courage taught me to take risk, to push myself to overcome obstacles on the path to worthwhile achievement, to cultivate calm and confidence in a crisis, and to meet inevitable human sorrows with dignity, inner strength, and grace. Her generosity of spirit taught me the healing power of compassion, the enabling power of encouragement and faith, and the inspirational power of selfless giving. Her fairness taught me the personal and social value of consistent impartiality, of how one’s commitment to ethical principle takes priority over pragmatic expediency and self-interest. Finally, her work ethic, reflecting the strength of her family roots, instilled in me self-discipline, diligence, perseverance, and a sense of personal pride for an honest day’s work.
—Paul Leclerc
