President's Message
Dear ESPA Members,
I just wanted to take a few minutes and update the membership with several issues that have transpired. The ESPA contract along with all state contracts expires 6-30-12. The union sent a letter of request to negotiate to the state the beginning of the year. So far there’s been no response. This is not unusual . It’s common practice for the state to take action after the budget is passed. With this being the process we will continue to work under the old contract until a new one is inked.
The state announced that TIAA-CREFF won the bid to handle the new 401K style retirement fund. I recently attended a meeting with other presidents to hear a presentation from the Treasurer’s office. They stated that all the changes will be posted on their website within two to three weeks. I will be checking with them next week to see exactly when this will happen. The law suit challenging these changes is still pending, hopefully the unions will have their day in court. There is a piece of legislation in requesting the reinstatement of Longevity increases. This is the only way we can get those pay increases back . They cannot be renegotiated back per the present bill. I will keep you posted as when the vote will take place.
There is a lot going on plus it’s an a election year. We are at the mercy of the legislature so the union will be watching closely how these individuals vote on our issues. The ESPA has a good team in place. The Executive Board members are in close contact with me weekly, this way I can address our concerns with the NEARI leadership and other unions statewide. If you have any concerns or questions as always please call or email me.
Thanks,
Lou Rainone, President ESPA
