Support Services

Classroom Technology Support

The Classroom Support Group provides support in a number of different areas, including the classroom, the delivery and loaning of equipment, and equipment maintenance and repair. Most classrooms are well equipped with audio-visual equipment. If you need to order equipment for any campus classroom, call Dolly Quigley at 455-6111 or 825-2231 or order what you need using the online form. It is not a bad idea to check with Dolly to confirm. You will find the equipment in the room on the date requested. Terry Bell is the person on the Knight Campus responsible for seeing that the proper equipment is brought to the room.

Learning Resource Center (The Library)

The Learning Resource Center contains a good collection of material and 19 computers for student use. Printing from the computers is free. Copying is available via a coin- and key-operated copier. Key cards are available next to the copier. Full time reference librarians Full time reference librarians Brenda Andrade, also coordinator of library instruction, and David Kaplan are knowledgeable and most helpful. Contact Brenda if you are interested in bringing a class into the library to do research. Reference: x 2215, circulation desk: x 2213.

Library orientations for students: Of special interest are the library orientations given by a reference librarian in a computer-supplied classroom on the fifth level of the library. Students are introduced to research methods on the internet.  Ask the librarians about providing any other library information you want your class to have. To schedule, contact the coordinator of bibliographic instruction and plan at least a week’s lead time at 825-2489. You may also call the Reference Desk or use the online form.

Also, if you want to bring a class into the library for research on their own, let the reference librarians know so they can plan to be available to help if they are needed. Even with advance notice, though, your students may not find computers to work on, since they are heavily used.

Library orientation for faculty: If you want an introduction to the library, call reference or stop in for an appointment. If librarians are not busy, you might get a tour right then. The entrance to the library is on the fourth floor next to the elevators.

AV materials are available from the library for classroom use.

Reading Evaluation

If you suspect a student in your class has a reading problem, discuss your observations with Reading Coordinator Jean Dietrich at 3246. She will evaluate the student’s needs and, if warranted, will arrange supplementary reading activities for the student.

The Writing Center

The director of the Writing Center, in 3200-3201 opposite Gail’s desk, offers students and faculty invaluable supplementary help in all aspects and all levels of the writing process. Feel free to discuss with her the student’s problems and the focus of work she can do with the student. Students are also welcome without faculty referral and can receive help with their writing in any discipline. The Writing Center contains the placement tests of the past year. If you wish to see a test or if you wish to know a student’s Accuplacer or reading score, ask the director. Hours are weekdays 8 to 4, 825-2279.
