Advice to Students about English Courses

Advising and Counseling has the primary responsibility for this, but the best advice is always given by an English faculty member. If the student is or wants to be an English major, he or she should be sent to Debra Lilli, member of the English Concentration Committee, 825-2352.

Athletes

To comply with NCAA and NJCAA standards, CCRI’s Athletics Department monitors student athletes through the Student Athlete Academic Support Program (SAASP). Three forms are used to follow the athlete’s academic performance. All will be brought to you by the athlete, who is responsible for returning them to the SAASP office by the end of the week. Most can be filled out on the spot.

The forms are (1) an attendance form, presented to you by the third week of the semester, (2) a grade check sheet brought to you at mid-semester, and if the student received a midterm grade of D, F, or U, (3) a performance improvement plan followed by (4) weekly checks on the athlete’s progress.  check sheet brought to you at mid-semester, and if the student received a midterm grade of D, F, or U, (3) a performance improvement plan followed by (4) weekly checks on the athlete’s progress.

Behavior Problems

These cover physical display of anger, physical or threatened violence, talking without being recognized or while others are talking, sleeping in class, routinely entering late and/or leaving early, dominating class discussion or attention, and cheating or plagiarism. A more complete explanation of the subject appears online in the Student Handbook.

If discussion of the issue with the student does not result in change of behavior, you have the right to refuse to have the student in the class. If a situation occurs in the class and the student refuses to leave on request, call Security 825-2105.  Keep good notes including dates and summaries of conversations with the student. Provide this information to Jim Glickman, the Campus Coordinator, who should be kept apprised of the problem.

Disabilities

Students with documented disabilities are eligible for help from Disability Services. This program operates under the mandates of the Federal Disabilities Act. Early in the semester a student may come to you with a Request for Academic Accommodations. You are legally obligated to meet the student’s needs. Counselors at Disability Services will work with you to devise the best ways of doing so. Alda McMahon is the contact person x 2164. If you have any questions regarding accommodating a student, contact Debra Lilli, the Department’s accommodations liaison, Rm. 3218, 825-2352.

Privacy Laws

Faculty can no longer leave student papers out for retrieval by the students in such a manner that grades or comments are readable by other students. Nor can faculty post grades even if by identification numbers. Therefore, if leaving papers in a common pile for return, find a way to protect students’ privacy, by, perhaps, putting papers in individual manila envelopes or another similar method.

Advising and Counseling Services

Advising and Counseling services include: academic advising, career, educational and personal counseling. Counselors are professionally trained and experienced in working with college students. Because the staff recognizes that college students are confronted with a variety of personal issues, they provide emotional support through individual and group counseling. Additionally, workshops throughout the year help students deal with issues such as depression, alcohol/drugs, test anxiety, time management, family/relationship issues, grief, and parental divorce. Counseling services are available by appointment or on a walk-in basis. All counseling services are free of charge and confidential. When appropriate, counselors also provide referrals to community-based service providers. For additional information or an appointment, call 825-230 in Flanagan.  Advising and Counseling offices are located in the rear of Enrollment Services.
