Building-Related Information

Paychecks

Adjunct paychecks are distributed the third Wednesday of each month at the Administration desk on the second floor or they may be direct deposited. If you prefer the latter, you need to fill out a form from Personnel (located at the top of the ramp to the third floor). To pick up paychecks, from the entrance ramp, go left past the elevators and through the two sets of double doors facing you. The receptionist at the desk opposite the second door has the checks.

Adjuncts’ paydays are the third Wednesday of the month. There are three checks in the fall starting with October and four in the spring starting with February. Summer session paychecks are available in June and July for session A, July and August for session B, and once in August for session C.

Full time temporary faculty are paid on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. Your paychecks can be either picked up at the Administration desk or directly deposited. Forms for the latter are obtained from Payroll.

Food

The cafeteria is on the ground floor at the end of the building opposite the entrance ramp, or, if you are coming up from Enrollment Services area, to the right at the top of the stairs. Cafeteria is open from 7:30 am to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7:30 to 2 on Friday. A wide variety of food is available from snacks to complete dinners. Drinks and snacks are also sold via machines outside the cafeteria and in the bookstore.

Bookstore

The bookstore has a range of supplies on the first floor and textbooks on the second. The first few weeks of class the bookstore has extended hours of 8:15 a.m. to  8 p.m. weekdays and 8:15 to 1:00 on Saturday. Thereafter hours are 8:15 to 7:00 Monday through Thursday and to 3:30 on Friday. The bookstore entrance is to the right at the top of the entrance ramp.

Restrooms

Faculty restrooms are at each end of the south corridor on the second and third floors. Student lavs are at ends of some of the classroom corridors on the sixth floor, in the main entrance and fourth floor hallways, in the hall adjacent to the cafeteria, and one is at the inner entrance to the library.

Telephones in the Classroom Areas

Wall telephones are in the center of each classroom corridor, at both entrances of the 6500 area and at either end of the outer south corridors. Obviously these are not for casual use.

Knight Campus Field House

The Knight Campus Field House, which is located in a separate building near the cafeteria, is fully equipped.  Contact the field house (825-2106) for specific details or for a schedule.

Fire Drills

System tests, which are infrequent, are always announced. If the buzzer goes off, consider it the real thing and evacuate the class. Have the students take anything of value with them. You grab the roster, attendance sheet, and the like.

Check the diagrams at the top of each staircase to determine the evacuation route for your class and the safe sites for physically challenged students (where during an emergency they go to await assistance in evacuating the building). College policy indicates that you stay with your class when leaving the building and that you stay in the safe site with any handicapped student you might have in the class, having first made an agreement to have a nearby teacher guide your class during exiting. Obviously this needs to be addressed with the College’s emergency planners. Meanwhile, at least know if anyone in the class needs help in case of an emergency and if that person has assistance or if you are it.

Weather-related cancellations

Extension 2344 is the line on which class cancellations are announced. Since many factors contribute to the decision to cancel classes, the announcement is not always made as early as one would like. Also, listen to the local radio stations.

Public Transportation

If you’re ever stuck without your car, not to worry. RIPTA schedules buses to the Knight campus at least once an hour through a variety of routes. The earliest leaves Kennedy Plaza at 5:50 a.m. and the last one leaves CCRI at 11:34 p.m. On Saturdays the earliest leaves Kennedy Plaza at 6:20 a.m. and the last bus leaves CCRI at 10:07 p.m. Call RIPTA for specifics: 800-244-0444.
