Class Profile:
Students take this second-level TV production course as an elective. They represent the demographic diversity of CCRI classrooms--primarily traditional high school graduates, some high school enrichment students, those with GED's, ESL students, and older, returning students--and have varying levels of oral and written communication skills. Furthermore, some students may have had a relevant high school course in video or TV production or have developed technical skills on their own. As students in TV Production II, they will build on basic technical knowledge and skills gained from successfully completing TV Production I. (Enrolled students have either completed Speech 1200: Television Production I or have received permission of the instructor. )
Course Objectives:
- To develop an awareness of the three stages of production
- To understand the roles and responsibilities of various personnel involved in the production process
- To develop knowledge of and skills with basic video production concepts, equipment, and processes
- To develop knowledge of and skills with location shoots, specifically, location lighting, audio, and setting up a location shoot
- To develop knowledge of and skills with basic audio production concepts, equipment, and processes
- To develop knowledge of and skills for conducting an interview
- To demonstrate basic understanding of communication production technology by developing projects
- To incorporate techniques and practices recommended within the industry
- To further develop post-production skills gained in TV Production I
- To demonstrate a high level of critical and creative thinking regarding decision making
- To encourage students to work as a contributing member of a production team, engaged in processes commonly used within the communication production industry
Student Learning Outcomes:
At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Brainstorm/outline ideas, transferring them to a storyboard and final script
- Make and defend a production proposal
- Plan all elements of a production, including lights, graphics, and audio
- Demonstrate an understanding of the various types of equipment used in production.
- Shoot a video using portable and studio cameras
- Conduct a pre-interview and videotaped interview
- Direct a location interview
- Demonstrate basic video switching
- Create titles using a character generator
- Switch between three studio cameras
- Edit a video with the use of non-linear editing equipment
- Collaborate effectively in group activities and projects
