Admission Guidelines
APPLICATIONS FOR 2014-2016 (DAST)

Minimum requirements for conditional acceptance into Dental Assisting program:
- CCRI application – Complete and submit a CCRI Application for Enrollment. General Studies should be first choice; DENT should be second choice.
- High school transcript – Send an official copy of a high school transcript or GED, including date of graduation must be provided. If the applicant holds a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university, the high school transcript may be waived; college transcript must indicate completion and degree awarded.
- Placement testing – Complete a standardized test (ACCUPLACER) issued by CCRI’s Department of Advising
and Counseling. Students may retake the ACCUPLACER test before completing the remedial
course/courses.
Math placement test must indicate competency in MATH 0500 through an
ACCUPLACER score of 65 or above on the arithmetic section or completion
of MATH 0500 with a grade of “C” or better.
English (writing) test must show readiness to take ENGL 1010: Composition I
or students must complete ENGL 1005: College Writing with a grade of “C”
or better. ENGL 1300 will not substitute for ENGL 1010.
Reading comprehension test must show competency of 80 or above or
students must complete ENGL 0890: Critical Reading with a grade of “B-”
or better. - Complete courses required for admission with a grade of “C” or better – Dent 1000: Introduction to Dental Health Careers. Students who have taken DHYG 1000: Introduction to Dental Hygiene with a final grade of “C” or better are exempt from DENT 1000.
- GPA – A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better for all college courses
- Health Sciences application – Complete and submit a performance-based Health Sciences application including a pre-admission degree evaluation during the open enrollment period.
- All the above requirements must be completed satisfactorily BEFORE submission of performance-based
Health Sciences application and do not guarantee acceptance to the program. Acceptance
is based on students’ performance in the criteria.* At the time of admission, the
student must meet the current admission requirements of the program. Students declining
acceptance into the program for the semester offered must resubmit a performance-based
Health Sciences application for the program and meet the current admission requirements.
Once accepted into Dental Assisting, the student must attend a mandatory orientation
conducted by the Dental Health Department.

- Background Check – Students are required to submit a background check when directed by notification from Enrollment Services.
Final acceptance is based on completion of all the above criteria.
Policies following acceptance in the Dental Assisting program:
- Individuals who disclose the presence of bloodborne infectious disease will be shown the same consideration as noninfected individuals and will be offered reasonable accommodation. Information regarding health status of an individual is considered confidential and protected by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.
- Applicants must have a physical examination and the required immunizations completed.
- Students also must have a current CPR card (American Heart Association, Health Care Provider level) obtained through an AHA recognized community training center (Course is also available at CCRI – HEAL 0200).
Please note: Requirements are subject to change.
Most students in the Dental Assisting certificate program attend classes full time. Therefore, the “normal” time to complete this certificate would be three (3) semesters (or 18 months). DAST Program Acceptance Sort Order
The performance-based acceptance process is based on the performance indicators identified for the Dental Assisting program. A point system has been assigned to each of the performance criteria listed in the admissions guidelines site.
The criteria for the incoming class in Fall will include:
- DENT 1000 grade
- Placement test reading score
- Number of general education courses completed
- Grades in specified courses using the following scale:
Grade in DENT 1000 Prerequisite GPA Maximum points = 10 A 10 points A- 9 points B+ 7 points B 5 points B- 3 points C+ 2 points C 1 point - ACCUPLACER reading comprehension test score (ACCUPLACER test may be taken no more than three times)
ACCUPLACER score of 80 or better = 10 points
or
A bachelor's degree = 10 points
or
Grade in ENGL 0890 = 2 - 10 points
Grade in ENGL 0890 Prerequisite GPA Maximum points = 10 A 10 points A- 8 points B+ 6 points B 4 points B- 2 points
Maximum points = 10 - Number of general education courses completed – Grade of “C” or better
Grade in DENT 1000 Course Maximum points = 25 BIOL 1070 or BIOL 1020 10 points COMM 1100 (formerly SPCH 1100) 5 points ENGL 1010 5 points PSYC 1030 or PSYC 201 5 points
Total Points: 45
Tie breaker: Earliest completion of DENT 1000.
Credits granted through AP, CLEP, challenge exams or assessment of prior learning credits will be recognized as satisfying course requirements and will be assigned 5 points.
***A student with a baccalaureate degree or higher may still be required to complete an ACCUPLACER Test depending on the prerequisites for individual general education courses.***
