GED® Testing
Important Information
If you are planning on taking the current GED® test, or have begun testing but haven't completed or passed the current test, you will need to complete the current test by December 13, 2013.
Computer Based Testing Begins January 2014
When the next-generation GED® test is launched on January 1, 2014, it will be delivered through computer-based testing only. The content in the new assessment will be aligned with the Common Core State Standards and other prevailing state standards.
Testing Sites
CCRI hosts two GED® testing sites that have been approved by the Rhode Island Department of Education, one on the Lincoln campus and the other on the Providence campus. Individuals can choose to take the GED® in either English or Spanish.
About the GED® Tests
There are five tests in the GED® Test Battery: Writing; Social Studies, Science, Reading and Mathematics. Each test takes anywhere from one to two hours to complete and include a direct writing assessment. To ensure that the content and skills measured by the tests remain closely matched to contemporary high school curriculum, the tests undergo regular review and revision. Test results are expressed as standard scores ranging from 200 to 800. States award a high school credential to individuals who earn at least 410 on each test and an average standard score of 450 or better across all five tests. How do I get my GED®?
Before registering to take an official GED® test at one of CCRI's test sites, you must first register for an orientation and assessment test session. Here, you will learn about the GED® and be tested to determine whether or not you are ready to take the official test. GED® specialists will be available to advise you. If you are ready, you will be scheduled to take the GED® tests. Or, you may require preparation classes in order to be successful. CCRI and other community-based organizations offer preparation classes. The GED® specialists will advise you on where you can attend appropriate classes.
The orientation and assessment test session will last approximately 3 hours each day (2 days). You must register in advance; a $20 fee must be paid at the time of registration. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Early registration is recommended.

Taking the GED® Tests
Once you have taken the assessment test and your score indicates that you are ready to take the GED®, you can register to take the official exam. There is a $55 fee to take all five tests but you must register to take each of the five tests (writing, social studies, reading, science and mathematics) separately. Should you fail any of the five tests, there is a $4 retest fee.
