Summer job alert: You might need some TiPS

If you are hoping to make money this summer as a bartender, bouncer, valet or alcohol server, new state legislation requires that you complete a certified alcohol server training program within 60 days of your first working day.

CCRI is one of several organizations in the state offering this kind of training. In fact, this April, the college will offer TiPS — Training for Intervention Procedures — at its Providence and Newport campuses. The program, geared toward new employees in the hospitality industry, is coordinated through the CCRI Division for Lifelong Learning.

Among the topic covered are the proper checking of IDs, effects of alcohol and signs of intoxication, strategies for dealing with an intoxicated patron and liability issues for servers. Students will also learn how to create a log for alcohol-related incidents.

CCRI will offer TiPS training sessions for a cost of $49 (plus a $5 registration fee) at the following dates and times:

Tuesday, April 11, 5 – 9 p.m., CCRI Providence
Saturday, April 15, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., CCRI Providence
Tuesday, April 18, 5 – 9 p.m., CCRI Newport
Saturday, April 22, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., CCRI Newport

For more information on the TiPS program, contact Pam Berry at the Division for Lifelong Learning, 455-6188.
