The #15-ranked CCRI Knights men’s basketball team is currently going through their toughest stretch of the season. A four-game losing skid in Florida against top Division I schools momentarily knocked the steam out of the full-throttle season they had up until that point. Two ensuing victories over Holyoke were followed by losses to Gloucester County and Division I power Monroe Community College. The Knights then powered up to take down Notre Dame Prep to bring their record back to 15-6. One steadily shining light during this rollercoaster has been the impeccable play of Team Captain Marvin Owens (Bridgeport, Conn.) who averaged 30.67 points per game in January. Owens is #3 on the CCRI All-Time scoring list with 1,155 career points behind #2 Rick Santos (’71-’73) at 1,340 points and Brendan Murphy (’90-’92) who is atop the CCRI All-time scoring list with 1,398 career points.
For the season, Owens has averaged 27.1 points per game, 8.3 rebounds per game, 3.3 assists per game, and 2.8 steals per game. Teammate Marquis Victor (Lawrence, Mass.) is another strong contributor, averaging 15.6 points per game. Connor Evans (Cranston) has posted 10.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, while Travon Little (Danbury, Conn.) averages 10.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.
The #16-ranked CCRI Knights women’s basketball team has been dealt a blow, losing starting center Odessa Williams (Stratford, Conn.) to injury for the season. Williams is the only returning member from last year’s national championship team. She was averaging 10.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in addition to providing a strong defensive presence on the inside. The Knights are currently 12-8 on the season with their remaining games this season against Division I schools and top Division II talent so their road to the post season will not be an easy one.
The Knights are led by Monet Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who is averaging 16.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. Helping Johnson are Jenny Kinney (Milford, N.J.) averaging 11.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, and co-captain Renee Buck (Ft. Gully, Victoria, Australia) averaging 8.25 points, 4 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game. Also contributing for the Knights are Lasheena Boyd (Stratford, Conn.) at nine points per game, co-captain Ana Sierra (Bronx, N.Y.) with 7.3 points per game, and Tamara Shaw (Norwalk, Conn.) averaging 8.2 points per game.
The Knights return home February 5 versus #8 Division I power and former two-time National Champion Monroe Community College.
CCRI women’s Indoor Track team has already set many records in just two meets this season led by Sherilyn Nicholas (Taunton, Mass.) who broke two school records at the Harvard Invitational Meet, one in the high jump where she placed 6th with a mark of 1.60m, and one in the 500m run where she placed 3rd with a time of 1:20.23, a NJCAA Division I national qualifying time. Nicholas also placed 20th in the 200m with a time of 27.60. Nicholas had already qualified for nationals in the high jump. Jasmine Jennings (Warwick), a second team All-American in 2004-05, qualified for the NJCAA Division I Championships with a 4th place 13.72m throw in the 20-lb pound weight event. The CCRI women’s 4x400m team of Teiaki Johnson (Providence), Temi Oyekoya (Woonsocket), Rachael Procter (East Providence) and Nicholas set a school record with their 8th place finish time of 4:33.16. Oyekoya ran a school record in the 60m hurdles with a 7th place time of 10.04 seconds. Other CCRI notable finishes include Jennings’ 4th place in the shot put with a throw of 11.56m.
The CCRI men’s indoor track team looks to be stronger then last years team. At Harvard, Nicholas Wienhofer (Newfoundland, Canada) set a new school record, placing 19th in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.77 seconds. Hunter Stewart (Foster) established a school record in the 500m run, placing 13th in a time of 1:09.74. Also at Harvard, Bryan Galvin (Seekonk, Mass.) broke his own school record in the mile run with a time of 4:46.14, which earned him 27th place.
