New coach, new captains, and the national spotlight on CCRI athletics
Men's basketball builds staff
The CCRI Men’s Basketball team has added a new member to their coaching staff. Arnie DeLaRosa has been named an assistant to Head Coach Dave Chavalier. DeLaRosa is a native of New London, Conn., and spent last year as an assistant men’s basketball coach at CCRI local rival Dean College and before that at North Shore Community College in Lynn, Mass. DeLaRosa will bring energy and intensity to an already seasoned staff.
Coaches name new captains
Head Baseball coach Ken Hopkins has announced that sophomore Seth Desautel (Cumberland) has been named captain of the Knights baseball team. Desautel, a multi-talented athlete, played second base, third base, and pitcher last year. Desautel spent the summer with head coach Ken Hopkins in Florida, playing in the Florida Collegiate Summer League for the Winter Haven Wart Hogs where he batted .278 over twelve games and had a 1-1 record on the mound.
Head Women’s Volleyball coach Ray DeAngelis has named sophomores Nicole Pedro (Fall River, Mass.) and Kayla Plante (Woonsocket) captains for the 2005 season. Pedro plays outside hitter while Plante plays libero (designated defensive player). These two returning sophomores will lead a team that, on paper, looks very potent.
Head Cross Country coach Gregg Cornell has named sophomores Chris Farrell (Lincoln) and Sherilyn Nicholas (Taunton, Mass.) captains for the 2005 Cross Country Season. Farrell was the Knights’ top finisher at the Nationals in 2004; he hopes to improve his time in the 8k by one minute and hopes to finish in the top 15 at the Nationals this year. Nicholas was a fourth or fifth spot runner last year but shows great promise as she will compete as the number one runner this year.
CCRI featured in national publication
The Community College of Rhode Island will be featured as the College of the month in this October’s edition of the “JUCO Review,” the official publication of the National Junior College Athletic Association. The October edition of the “JUCO Review” will feature a cover shot and a centerfold highlighting CCRI and our athletic department.
