CCRI's Access to Opportunity team participates in Taiwan Day dragon boat race

Story by Eric Klein

The promise of sore muscles and sunburned faces wasn’t enough to stop CCRI’s enthusiastic Team Access to Opportunity from racing their hearts out at the recent 6th Annual Chinese Dragon Boat Race & Taiwan Day Festival in Pawtucket. In the wee hours of the morning, a motley crew of 22 CCRI students, faculty, staff and friends piled into a 52-foot Chinese Dragon Boat.

Each year the Festival attracts teams from across New England as well as thousands of onlookers who come to enjoy the races, food and phenomenal artistic performances at the day-long celebration of Chinese and Taiwanese culture. This year was the first time the community college fielded a team for the race; the college’s participation was the brainchild of Access’s newest counselor, Monica Lee, and was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Louis Yip, former owner of the China Inn in Pawtucket. Dinner for the team was provided by Alex Deng of the China Inn. Racing tips and instructions came courtesy of Sunny Ng.

Although they had practiced together only once (a “dry-run” during dinner at the China Inn the night before), Team Access to Opportunity crossed the finish line in a reasonable 3:36 minutes and was widely regarded as enjoying the loudest cheering section on the river bank.
