Grant wins film awards

Norm Grant, senior information technologist, was recently recognized for his work with two first place awards at the RI PEG Awards competition. Grant's Master's thesis project, Out of Irons, won in the student-produced program. Grant says the film is "a documentary film that follows the activities of Peter Benson and Matt Sullivan as they attempt to win a third successive Freedom 20 North American sailboat championship. Against extraordinary circumstances these disabled sailors transcend the physical with their personalities, spirit for competition, and their love for human connections. Sailing is more than an athletic activity for Peter and Matt.  It is a metaphor that represents how both of these sailors lead their lives."

Grant's second gold was for best cooperative effort with a school or non-profit group. S.C.O.R.E.  is a 42 minute film to supplement a program of the name at the Adult Correctional Institution in Rhode Island. This program is aimed at persuading young men and women to positively alter their future in a way that would discourage a lifestyle leading to negative dealings with the law and/or possible incarceration.  In the film high school students have an opportunity to hear from and speak with Rhode Island Correctional officers and inmates in medium security at the A.C.I.

Gomes recognized

John Gomes of the Division for Lifelong Learning was recently recognized by the state legislature for his efforts in developing CCRI's Construction Training Program. Gomes was also recognized by the Urban League Youthbuild Program for his support through collaborative CCRI efforts.
