CCRI Women's B-Ball Captures Northeast District Title

The #6 ranked CCRI women's basketball team beat Mercer County CC 88-61 to win the Northeast District Title. The Lady Knights were led by co-captain Jeanell Hughes (Baltimore, MD) who had 25 points and eight assists; co-captain Amanda Ward (East Hartford, CT) who had 23 points; and Tournament MVP Babette Noah (Cameroon, Africa) who scored 21 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and blocked three shots. Also contributing was co-captain Nikki Dalton (Danbury, CT) who ripped down 15 rebounds and scored six points while Shermane Farrior (Bronx, NY) had 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

In addition to their record breaking season, four players - Ward, Hughes, Noah and Farrior - were selected to the First Team All-Region for Region XXI Division II.

CCRI men’s basketball team beat Dean College 83-75 to capture the Region XXI Championship. Darrell Taylor (Providence, RI) charted a double-double scoring 20, dishing out 10 assists, and knocking down critical free throws as the game came to a close. Taylor’s clutch performance was enough to earn him Region XXI Championship MVP honors. Also helping the cause were Marvin Owens (Bridgeport, CT) who had a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while CCRI co-captain Kenny Jones (Baltimore, MD) poured in 19 points and co-captain Alex Owumi (Boston, MA) contributed a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

In addition to their great season as a team, Owens and Owumi were selected First Team All-Region for Region XXI Division II.

CCRI Indoor Track is also making waves in the community college sports world. Jasmine Jennings (Warwick, RI) came in 2nd in the 20 lb weight throw with a throw of 55'03.75" or 18.1 meters to earn Second Team All-American honors recently at the 2005 Indoor Track Nationals in Charleston, Illinois. Jennings also placed 6th in the shot put with a throw of 38’06.75” earning her Coaches Association All-American honors for that event. In addition to Jennings, Nicole Sauer (East Greenwich, RI) placed 4th in the 20 lb weight throw with a throw of 48' 03.75", qualifying her as a Coaches Association All-American as well. As a team CCRI finished in 11th place out of 30 teams who participated, ranking the team highest among Division III schools.
