John Dionne of East Providence, a business administration student at the Community College of Rhode Island, recently won the gold medal in his skill area at an international Delta Epsilon Chi competition that simulated real-world business situations. Dionne, who competed and won in the Sales Manager Meeting competition, was one of 80 competitors from Rhode Island. The international competition was held at the Disneyland Resort and Conference Center May 4-7 in Anaheim, California.

Delta Epsilon Chi – the college division of DECA – serves as a professional organization for a diverse international membership of 14,000, providing leadership and career-oriented opportunities to develop and enhance leaders of tomorrow. Delta Epsilon Chi’s renowned competitive events use role playing, online simulations and written project reports to evaluate students’ marketing and management skills – specific skills identified by the business community as essential for success taught through Delta Epsilon Chi activities. Dionne qualified to compete at the international level in Sales Manager Meeting by winning at the state level earlier this spring. Events are judged by qualified business professionals in the field.

CCRI Liston Campus Chapter Advisor Joanne Orabone, a professor of business at the college, praised Dionne’s dedication. “He put in several hours a week preparing. John is a dedicated student who makes the extra effort and it paid off with gold.” Orabone, along with JoAnn Warren, business professor at the Knight Campus in Warwick, designed the program to train the competitors. CCRI’s Delta Epsilon Chi chapter members have been had great success in high-level competition, garnering several state and international awards.
