Established in December 2004, the Mission Initiative Committee continues to meet regularly to update CCRI’s mission statement and remains on target to meet the mid-fall submission deadline required by the accrediting body the New England Association of Schools Colleges (NEASC) and by the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education.
The Committee recently completed a series of “draft” Mission, Vision and Value statements and now seeks your input, reaction and response through an online survey. This survey is available on-line at the Mission Initiative Web site: http://www.ccri.edu/mission, and was also mailed directly to the offices and/or homes of all CCRI employees. Results of the survey will be tabulated and incorporated in the next redraft. The Committee anticipates sharing these revisions with the college community during our Sept. 1 Opening Day.
The entire college community participated in the development of these statements either through conversations with individual committee members, on-line and mail surveys, and/or in public discussion forums.
Historically, the work of this committee began in the spring of 2001. Many of us recall participating in one of many public discussion forums or completing a survey seeking thoughts and ideas about CCRI’s purpose and vision for the future. This work, along with the recommendations made by the sub-committee on Mission and Purpose of the NEASC Self-Study (2002-2003), became the foundation for our current initiative.
The Mission Initiative Committee designed a strategy for revising CCRI’s mission statement in January 2005. This strategy outlined an education process as well as a process for inclusion and transparency.
The committee reviewed criteria for ‘effective’ statements, processes used to draft statements as well as how they are used at similar institutions. Activities designed to educate and include the college community began in February 2005 with an on-line survey. To elicit additional input and further discussion, forums were held throughout March 2005 on all four campuses. Information and outcomes are available on the Mission Initiative Committee’s Web site.
Draft statements were developed in April 2005, and shared with Department Chairs in May 2005. Statements were redrafted based on the Chairs’ input and were released in a survey distributed in June 2005. The opportunity to participate has been extended through July. If you have not yet completed the survey, we urge you to do so by visiting the committee's Web site at: www.ccri.edu/mission.
Next steps include further discussion during Opening Day on Thursday, Sept. 1, redrafting and release of the statements in late September; and recommendations presented to the President’s Council in October 2005.
Your opinion matters. Please review the draft statements, complete the survey or contact any member of the committee. This is an important milestone in CCRI’s history: the development of a mission, vision and value statement created by those who live it.
