The title of Professor Emeritus has been given to retired Community College of Rhode Island Professor of Psychology Loren William Cheney. Professor Emeritus is an honorific title given to a retired CCRI faculty member who has served a minimum of twenty years at CCRI, achieved the level of full professor and has made significant contributions to the college beyond their contractual obligation.
Dr. Cheney’s 32 years of service at CCRI include being one of the first faculty members to implement service learning in their classes; working with Professor Ed Rooney in developing a career information seminar for students who are unsure about which career to venture into; organizing a CCRI Psychology club and advising Psi Beta on campus. Dr. Cheney also served as regional vice president and national president of Psi Beta; the national honor society for psychology students at community colleges.
For every contribution that Dr. Cheney has made to the college, he also has enjoyed the opportunity to work cooperatively with his colleagues and students. “It was rewarding getting to know the students and faculty at CCRI,” he says.
One of Dr. Cheney’s proudest contributions to the college is the development, along with Dean of Students Rebecca Yount and other faculty of the CCRI Service Learning Program, of a course where students receive credit for doing volunteer work outside class. Cheney worked with community agencies to find places for students to volunteer and build contacts in the community.
“I have received much more personally and professionally than I could ever hope to give to this college,” said Professor Cheney. He says that his years of service at the college impacted him profoundly.
The CCRI community congratulates Professor Bill Cheney on the distinction of being named Professor Emeritus and thanks him for his commitment to creating new opportunities for students.
