Personal Computer Software (Open Office)

11 a.m. to 12:50 pm. Tuesday and Thursday
In this course students will be introduced to OpenOffice, the open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. Downloading and installing the software packages will be discussed and students will create, modify and save projects created using the OpenOffice software. Advantages and disadvantages of using open source software will be discussed. This is the free alternative to Microsoft Office.
Each class will be combination of lecture and hands-on labs.

In this class you will learn to build 2-D arcade-style games using the Python programming language. Python is a widely-used language (used by Yahoo, Google, and Industrial Light and Magic) that is open source, and therefore free. Python is a multi-paradigm language; you will learn to use functional decomposition and object-oriented design while building arcade-style games. This is an introductory programming course, but advanced students are welcome and can be guided in more advanced projects. The course briefly introduces the technical aspects of the creation of graphics and audio for games using open-source tools.

This module familiarizes students with operating system commands for the MAC personal computer. Students are exposed to statements to enhance their computer operation abilities using the Leopard operating system.

In this course, students will learn to create dynamic and interactive Web site content through the use of the Web scripting languages JavaScript and ASP.NET, which facilitate the creation of interactive, easy-to-use Web sites with dynamic content such as animation, forms, client-side updates and pages on demand. No prior programming experience is required.

Due to the dramatic growth of the Internet, Web design opportunities are exploding. Whether you are interested in designing your own Web site or exploring a potential career in Web design, this course will get your feet wet and teach you the basics. This course introduces the fundamentals of the XML Web design language. In the first few weeks of class, your Web site will be up and running. This course is taught both face to face in Warwick and online.

Lights, camera, media! New media comes to CCRI this fall, where students will learn to edit media content with Academy Award-winning Avid Media Composer software, the editing software that is used by professional editors and media content producers around the world. This course has limited enrollment – only 14 seats are available. COMI-1775 consists of three, 1-credit courses that run consecutively from September through December and students can sign up for all three. See you in the editing room.
