Students discover collaborative learning at Ready to Learn on the Liston Campus in Providence.
The preschool classroom on the Providence campus of CCRI is operated by Ready to Learn Providence (R2LP), a city-wide school readiness initiative with the vision that all children in Providence will enter school healthy and ready to learn. Our classroom on the Liston campus is one of seven demonstration sites funded by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) in four cities in Rhode Island. This project provides preschool age children of Rhode Island with a high quality early learning experience. The curriculum is aligned with the Rhode Island Early Learning Standards and offers children a stimulating and playful environment in which they can explore and learn. For more information about the pre-kindergarten demonstration project sponsored by RIDE, please visit http://www.ride.ri.gov/els/.
The R2LP classroom at CCRI recently earned a five-star ranking from BrightStars, the state's quality rating and improvement system. The program is available at no charge to any child, four years of age, who is a resident of Providence. Children are selected by lottery during the summer for the school year which begins in September.
"We're very excited about being part of this demonstration project," says R2LP Director Leslie Gell. "Whether it's through our many professional development programs for early-care providers already at work, or by participating in a program such as this, expanding access to high-quality child care is at the heart of everything we do. The research is clear that it makes an enormous difference not only when a child enters kindergarten but throughout his or her life."
