HSTO (Histotechnician)
HSTO 1310- Introduction to Histology 3 credits
Students are introduced to the procedures involved in the initial accessioning, evaluation, processing and slide preparation of various surgical and autopsy specimens. Additional topics such as safety/infection control, instrumentation and laboratory mathematics are included.
HSTO 1320 Histology II 6 credits
This course provides a clinical setting for students to apply the principles and techniques associated with routine histological procedures. The histology laboratory prepares tissues from surgical procedures and autopsies for microscopic examination by a pathologist. This course provides students with an opportunity to develop entry-level skills under the supervision of a licensed histotechnician. Skills are obtained through observation and performance of basic histological procedures. (Prerequisite: HSTO 1310 and enrollment in Histotechnician program)
HSTO 2310 Histology III 9 credits
This course provides practical application of principles and techniques of histological practice. The clinical setting provides realistic conditions under which a histotechnician functions and allows students to refine those skills acquired in Histology II. The histology laboratory prepares tissues from surgical procedures and autopsies for microscopic examination by a pathologist. This course provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate skills under the supervision of a certified histotechnician. This is obtained by observation and instruction in all areas at the bench to assure that quality performance is of the highest level of accuracy and precision. (Prerequisite: HSTO 1320)
HSTO 2320: Histology IV 12 credits
This course provides practical application of principles and techniques of advanced histological procedures. The clinical setting provides realistic conditions under which a histotechnician functions and allows students to refine skills acquired in Histology III. Under the supervision of a certified histotechnician, field experience in the histology lab provides an opportunity for students to expand their knowledge and refine skills previously acquired.. This is accomplished through observation and instruction in all areas of the histology lab to ensure quality performance of the highest level of accuracy and precision in a clinical setting. (Prerequisite: HSTO 2310)
HSTO 2330 Histology Seminar 2 credits
This course provides students with an extensive review, as well as assistance in the preparation of a portfolio. Guest lecturers discuss advanced topics in histology and professional issues. Student histotechnicians must be able to integrate didactic with clinical application. This course provides integration of previously learned theory and practice to various clinical scenarios. (Corequisite: HSTO 2320)
