Occupational Therapy Assistant

Satellite at Newport Hospital

Occupational therapy is the use of purposeful activity and interventions to promote health and achieve functional outcomes in performance areas, which include activities of daily living, work and productive activities, and play or leisure activities. Occupational therapy assistants, under the supervision of registered occupational therapists, help people of all ages to lead productive, satisfying lives.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program is offered at the Satellite Campus at Newport Hospital. It is an evening/weekend program, except for all fieldwork experiences, which are offered during the day. Although the OTA courses are given at the Newport location, the required general education courses may be taken at other CCRI sites prior to acceptance. All fieldwork courses shall be completed within 18 months following completion of the academic preparation.

Students successfully completing an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant Program receive an Associate in Applied Science (A. A. S.) degree, and are eligible to sit for the national certification examination for occupational therapy assistants, which is administered by the National Certification Board for Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT). An individual must successfully pass the certification examination in order to apply for licensure to practice as a COTA in the State of Rhode Island. The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at the Community College of RI is accredited by the American Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). Technical Standards: These standards give a sense of the physical requirements, psychomotor skills and affective behaviors associated with a particular occupation. The physical activity (Strength) level for Occupational Therapy Assistant (076.364-010) is classified as �Medium� by the Department of Labor in The Dictionary of Occupational Titles.

Admission Requirements:
  • Completed application
  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • The following courses must be successfully completed with a grade of �C� or better prior to acceptance:

    OCTA 1000 Introduction to Occupational Therapy
    RHAB 1010 Medical Terminology for Rehabilitative Health
    BIOL1010 Human Anatomy
    BIOL1020 Human Physiology
    ENGL1010  Composition I (may not substitute ENGL 1300)
    MATH 1420 Introduction to College Math
    PSYC2010 General Psychology
    PSYC 2030 Developmental Psychology
    SPCH1100 Oral Communication I

  • A cumulative average of at least 2.0 for all previous college courses.
  • Completion of a standardized test (Accuplacer) issued by CCRI through the Office of Student Services is required. Competency of 75 or above is required on the reading comprehension test or completion of ENGL 0890: Critical Reading, with a grade of B or better.
Program Requirements:
  • Students must earn at least a grade of 75 in core courses in order to progress to the next semester of program.
  • Students must maintain a passing status in the clinical and laboratory components of each Occupational Therapy Assistant Course.
  • Students must successfully complete a cumulative final, administered at the end of each semester with a grade of 75 in order to proceed to the next semester.
  • All applicants must complete health requirements established by the College and the Program prior to beginning OCTA 1030: Fundamentals of Treatment II.

Background Check: Students will be required to have a criminal background check through the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). In compliance with requirements for clinical agencies, anyone who has been convicted of a felony may be unable to attend clinical/field experience. No incident or probation must have occurred within the past 5 years. Further, applicants convicted of a felony will need to comply with state licensure requirements from the Rhode Island Department of Health. For more information, contact the department chairperson.

Program faculty reserve the right to require withdrawal of any student from the program or to refuse reinstatement based on the student�s academic, clinical or professional performance.

Physical Therapist Assistant

The Community College of Rhode Island Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association. It consists of a variety of courses that includes physical therapy theory and practice as well as supporting courses from general education. The individual who successfully completes these courses receives an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree and is eligible to take the licensure examination for physical therapist assistants.

The Physical Therapist Assistant Program is offered at the Satellite Campus at Newport Hospital. It is a full-time day program, although it is recommended that many of the courses outside of the Physical Therapist Assistant program be taken prior to acceptance into the program.

Individuals who are licensed Physical Therapist Assistants are eligible to work in public or private hospitals, clinics or health agencies. As a physical therapist assistant you will work under the supervision of a physical therapist utilizing prescribed activities to help patients recover physical function lost through disease, injury or other causes, and to relieve pain and promote healing.

The Physical Therapist Assistant Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), 1111 N. Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.

  • A cumulative average of at least a �C� (2.0 GPA) for all previous college courses
  • Biology 1010 Human Anatomy with at least a grade of �C�
  • ENGL 1010 (by testing or coursework)
  • MATH 0500 (by testing or coursework)
  • PHTA 1000 Introduction to the Physical Therapist Assistant with at least a grade of �C�
  • RHAB 1010 Medical Terminology for Rehabilitative Health with at least a grade of �C�
  • Completion of a standardized test (Accuplacer) issued by CCRI through the Office of Student Services is required. Competency of 75 or above is required on the reading comprehension test or completion of ENGL 0890: Critical Reading, with a grade of B or better.

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better
  • Completion of health requirements established by the College and the Program prior to the beginning of PHTA 1020 Physical Therapist Assistant II.
  • Students must earn at least a grade of 75 in all core courses in order to progress to the next semester in the program.
  • Students must maintain a grade of 75 in the clinical and laboratory components of each Physical Therapist Assistant course.
  • ENGL 1300 cannot substitute for ENGL 1010.

Therapeutic Massage

Satellite at Newport Hospital

Therapeutic massage involves the use of manual soft tissue mobilization to promote health and wellness. Recent scientific studies have documented the many positive physical, mental, and emotional effects of massage. The Therapeutic Massage Program offers students a strong scientific basis for the understanding and application of various soft tissue techniques. Various types of massage will be studied, including both Eastern and Western approaches.

The Therapeutic Massage Program is offered at the Satellite Campus at Newport Hospital. It is an evening and weekend program. Although the Therapeutic Massage courses are given at the Newport location, the required general education courses may be taken at other CCRI sites prior to acceptance. All fieldwork courses shall be completed within 18 months following completion of the academic preparation.

An individual must successfully pass the certification examination in order to apply for licensure to practice as a Licensed Massage Therapist in the state of Rhode Island. The Therapeutic Massage Program at the Community College of Rhode Island is in the process of accreditation.

Technical Standards: These standards give a sense of the physical requirements, psychomotor skills and affective behaviors associated with a particular occupation. The physical activity (Strength) level for Massage Therapist is classified as �Medium� by the Department of Labor in The Dictionary of Occupational Titles. The student must be able to receive and give massage and perform basic massage techniques as indicated in course syllabi.
