Office Administration

This program has been designed to train administrative office professionals in any of the areas of concentration listed here. Some options enable a student to earn an associate degree. Other options enable a student to earn a nine-month certificate. The courses have been tailored to help students fill the various needs of the business community.

Administrative Assistant/Secretary Associate Degree

The development of good basic office skills and training will be stressed during the first year of this program. The second year is devoted to training in those tasks encountered by the administrative assistant involving high-level skills, decision making, accepting responsibility, and managing an office.

Students who successfully complete this concentration receive an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree.

Legal Administrative Assistant/Secretary Associate Degree – Flanagan Campus

In this program the first year is devoted to developing a strong foundation in basic office skills. During the second year, comprehensive training in the legal secretarial field is given encompassing legal forms, terminology, several law courses, and tasks encountered by the legal administrative assistant involving high-level legal skills, accepting responsibility, and managing a legal office.
Students who successfully complete this concentration receive an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree.

Medical Administrative Assistant/Secretary Associate Degree – Knight Campus

During the first year, the student receives a strong foundation in basic secretarial skills and procedures. The second year is devoted to the highly technical training necessary for a competent medical secretary in the areas of medical terminology, office procedures, keyboarding and transcription. Students will be given an opportunity in their last semester to work in a local medical office. In order to qualify for this valuable externship, students must earn at least a C in all courses attempted.

Students who successfully complete this concentration receive an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree.

Medical Transcription Certificate – Knight Campus

This program is designed to prepare students for employment in the health care field. Upon completion of the program, students will be trained in the use of medical terminology, the transcription of various types of medical reports, and the handling of medical office duties. Cooperative work experience in a medical office is a requirement of this program.

Students applying to the Medical Transcription Certificate Program must be high school graduates (or equivalent) and be able to type at a rate of 30 words per minute.

Basic Office Skills Certificate

The Basic Office Skills Program is designed to give students immediate job training for entry-level office positions. Such positions include office assistant, word processing typist, receptionist and data entry clerk. This certificate could also be completed part-time days and/or evenings, but would, of course, extend the time for completion. Students may also use these credits toward other Office Administration certificates and degree programs. In addition, this certificate fits into the elective credit portion of the General Studies and Liberal Arts degree program.

* A challenge exam will be administered for the prerequisite course, OFTD 1120. Students passing this exam will be able to enroll directly into the OFTD 1220 course. Students who do not pass this exam, or who have no keyboarding skill, must enroll in the OFTD 1160 course first.

Note: General Studies and Liberal Arts students can use the elective credits portion of their degree programs to earn a certificate in Basic Office Skills (17 credits) and/or Office Administration (35 credits) as well as other department certificates. Following this procedure would enable student to graduate as a dual major.

Legal Office Assistant Certificate – Flanagan Campus

(This program offered daytime only)

The Legal Office Assistant Certificate Program is designed specifically for students interested in acquiring the skills needed for entry-level legal administrative support positions in the least amount of time. These office environments offer rewarding career opportunities for the one-year college graduate, and employment trends for the future indicate a continuing demand for graduates of this program. As such, it is ideal for the displaced transitional worker. All credits earned in this certificate program are fully transferable to the Legal Administrative Assistant Degree Program.

Note: To complete this certificate in one year, students must already be able to type at the rate of 25 words per minute before enrolling in the program, or they must enroll in a Keyboarding I course which will prolong the time it takes to complete the program by one semester.

Travel and Tourism Certificate

The Travel and Tourism program is intended to provide students with the skills and expertise necessary for careers in a growing industry. The primary goal is to develop individuals who are familiar with the industry via travel-related courses and to help them acquire the necessary skills to gain employment in the field.

This certificate has been developed as a part-time evening program that requires 34 credits for completion.

Option 1: The first option for students who complete the certificate program is to enter the travel and tourism industry with marketable skills and training.

Option 2: The second option for Travel and Tourism certificate recipients is to continue their education in the General Studies Program. Students interested in earning an associate degree from CCRI may apply their Travel and Tourism credits to the General Studies degree program. The General Studies degree program requires 60 credits for completion, 28 of which are elective credits. The Travel and Tourism certificate program requires 34 credits, including six in math and English, which are also part of the General Studies degree. The remaining 28 credits from the Travel and Tourism program can be used to meet the 28 elective credits for the General Studies degree.

Students will be able to complete the Travel and Tourism certificate first and then apply all credits toward a General Studies degree or work concurrently in the two programs.
