Major Requirements
Therapeutic massage involves the use of manual soft tissue
mobilization to promote health and wellness. Recent scientific studies have documented
the many positive physical, mental, and emotional effects of massage. The Therapeutic
Massage Program offers students a strong scientific basis for the understanding
and application of various soft tissue techniques. Various types of massage will
be studied, including both Eastern and Western approaches.
The Therapeutic Massage Program is offered at the Satellite Campus at Newport
Hospital. It is an evening and weekend program. Although the Therapeutic Massage
courses are given at the Newport location, the required general education courses
may be taken at other CCRI sites prior to acceptance. All fieldwork courses shall
be completed within 18 months following completion of the academic preparation.
Students successfully completing the Therapeutic Massage Program receive an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree. All students are eligible to sit for the national certification examination
for Massage Therapists, which is administered by the National Certification Board
for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). An individual must successfully pass
the certification examination in order to apply for licensure to practice as a Licensed
Massage Therapist in the state of Rhode Island. The Therapeutic Massage Program
at the Community College of Rhode Island is in the process of accreditation.
Technical Standards: These standards give a sense of the physical requirements,
psychomotor skills and affective behaviors associated with a particular occupation.
The physical activity (Strength) level for Massage Therapist is classified as “Medium”
