Phlebotomists are essential members of the health care delivery
team who are primarily responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients
for laboratory testing. Qualified phlebotomists may be employed in hospital laboratories,
private laboratories, doctors’ offices, clinics, emergency rooms or blood donor
centers.
The Phlebotomy Certificate Program is a part-time, two semester program which
is offered three times a year. The program includes lectures and laboratory
experiences at the college as well as practical training at a clinical site. Students
must successfully complete Phlebotomy I with a grade of "C" or better before they
are allowed to take Phlebotomy II. The course of instruction is designed to provide
both the technical and interpersonal skills required for the competent and professional
practice of phlebotomy. Students are eligible for the Dean’s List and receive college
credit. Graduates of the program are eligible to take a national certification examination
in phlebotomy. Phlebotomy students are eligible for financial aid.
The rapid and expanded growth of scientific knowledge and technology has given
rise to an increase in testing volume, the development of new testing systems, and
commitment to quality assurance in the clinical laboratory. The phlebotomist plays
a vital role by obtaining quality specimens which enable the laboratory to deliver
meaningful and accurate test results to assist the physician in diagnosis. Often,
the phlebotomist is the only employee from the clinical laboratory visible to the
patient, and therefore affects public relations.
Technical Standards: These standards give a sense
of the physical requirements, psychomotor skills and affective behaviors associated
with a particular occupation. The physical activity (Strength) level for Phlebotomist
(079.364-022) is classified as "Light" by the Department of Labor in the Dictionary
of Occupational Titles.
Admission Requirements: High school transcript
or a general equivalency diploma. (GED)
Program Requirements: Maintain at least a grade
of "C" in PHLE I and II. Maintain a cumulative GPA of
2.0 or greater.
Background Check: A criminal background check
will be done for all students entering health programs.
See
Program faculty reserve the right to require withdrawal of any student from
the program or to refuse reinstatement based on the student’s academic, clinical
or professional performance.
