Occupational therapy is the use of purposeful activity and
interventions to promote health and achieve functional outcomes in performance areas,
which include activities of daily living, work and productive activities, and play
or leisure activities. Occupational therapy assistants, under the supervision of
registered occupational therapists, help people of all ages to lead productive,
satisfying lives.
The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program is offered at the Satellite Campus
at Newport Hospital. It is an evening/weekend program, except for all fieldwork
experiences, which are offered during the day. Although the OTA courses are given
at the Newport location, the required general education courses may be taken at
other CCRI sites prior to acceptance. All fieldwork courses shall be completed within
18 months following completion of the academic preparation.
Students successfully completing an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant
Program receive an Associate in Applied Science (A.A. S.) degree, and are eligible
to sit for the national certification examination for occupational therapy assistants,
which is administered by the National Certification Board for Occupational Therapy,
Inc. (NBCOT). An individual must successfully pass the certification examination
in order to apply for licensure to practice as a COTA in the State of Rhode Island.
The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at the Community College of RI is accredited
by the American Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). If there are
any questions regarding the accreditation process, you may contact ACOTE at 4720
Montgomery Lane, P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, MA 20824-1220 or call 800.729.2682.
