Real Estate

Community College of Rhode Island has formed a partnership with the Rhode Island Association of Realtors (RIAR) to offer an associate degree in real estate.

The program combines a variety of courses offered by CCRI and courses offered by RIAR through the Graduate Realtors Institute. Community college courses are included to assist individuals in sales and day-to-day operations of a real estate office. The Graduate Realtor Institute will provide the technical training courses in real estate. Students should contact the Realtors Association at 785-3650 for information and registration of Technical Training courses.

The program is designed to prepare individuals interested in becoming real estate agents or brokers and also to upgrade the skill of those already working in the field.

Students who successfully complete the program will receive an Associate in Applied Science in Technical Studies (A.A.S.-T.S.) degree.

Retail Management – Flanagan Campus

This program has been developed to prepare students for opportunities in retailing. The program is designed to strengthen academic skills and to develop and advance a student’s knowledge of the economic operations of retailing so that (s)he may operate professionally and profitably in any retailing activity. A student may elect to major in either mass merchandising or fashion merchandising, depending on the student’s career objective.

A major component of this program is the "cooperative work experience" which is required of all students. All students must successfully complete 24 credits. Then, with the approval of the faculty and the cooperative education coordinator, they will be assigned to a work experience in the field of retailing for two semesters.

During their cooperative work experience, the students will be employed in retailing establishments throughout the state. The amount of reimbursement that the students receive will not be less than minimum wage, and may be higher, depending on the policy of the company.

The faculty reserves the right to require the withdrawal at any time of any student who gives evidence of inability to carry out the responsibility of this program.

To meet the requirements for the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree, students must take and pass all courses listed in the program of study and accumulate a total of 60 credits.

Accounting Certificate

CCRI’s Accounting Certificate program offers the individual an opportunity to acquire an academic foundation in accounting. These studies include three foundation accounting courses that cover the complete accounting cycle from initial journal entries to the preparation of financial statements. Intermediate Accounting I (ACCT 2010) is required, and it is strongly recommended that Intermediate Accounting II (ACCT 2020) be taken as an elective. Accounting for service, merchandising and manufacturing businesses is discussed. Students will be required to take courses in income taxes and computer studies which are essential to the successful study of accounting. Six credits in electives based upon the students’ specific interest complete this certificate program.

The Certificate in Accounting program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the accounting field and to enhance the practical skills of individuals currently employed in an accounting-related position.

Students interested in this program are advised to develop a plan of study to coordinate the timing and availability of all courses.

Note: All credits earned in this certificate program are applicable towards an associate degree program in business with a major in accounting.

Entrepreneurship Certificate

This program is designed to provide individuals with a basic understanding of the principles, concepts, and procedures necessary to start a small business. Upon completing the core and elective courses, the student will apply his/her knowledge through an entrepreneurial capstone course.
