MEDL 2350 – Medical Terminology - 2 Credits

An introduction to medical, diagnostic, symptomatic and surgical terms. Literal definition and spelling of such terms is stressed. (Corequisite: BIOL 1070 Anatomy and Physiology or permission of instructor) Lecture: 2 hours

MEDL 2360 – Medical Document Processing - 3 Credits

This course acquaints the Medical Administrative Secretary/Assistant with the formatting and editing skills needed for processing medical documents that are commonly part of their work load. A job simulation project is the basis for these applications which will be completed on microcomputers. Students will continue to develop their keyboarding speed and accuracy. A minimum of 40 wpm is required to pass this course. (Corequisite: OFAD 1220 or permission of instructor)

MEDL 2380 – Medical Machine Transcription I - 3 Credits

This course is designed to stress the skills a medical transcriptionist must possess in preparing for eventual employment in a private physician’s office, a clinic, or a hospital. Emphasis will be placed on the efficient production of case histories and physical examinations, radiological reports, x-rays, operative reports, pathology reports, discharge summaries and autopsy reports from pre-recorded dictation material. (Corequisite: OFAD 1220 or permission of instructor) Lecture: 2 hours, Lab: 2 hours

MEDL 2390 – CPT Medical Insurance Coding - 1 Credit

This course is designed to familiarize the student with Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes and modifiers along with their corresponding unique descriptions. Topics covered will include use of Guidelines, Notes, Index, Appendices and Modifiers and AMA Documentation Guidelines to insure correct coding. Various coding scenarios challenge small groups to apply techniques learned to code claims. (Prerequisite: MEDL 2350 and permission of instructor). Lecture: 1 hour

MEDL 2400 – ICD-CM Medical Insurance Coding - 1 Credit

This course is designed to familiarize the student with International Classification of Diseases and Clinical Modification codes (ICD-CM). Overview of the Tabular List (Volume I) and the Alpha Index (Volume II) will include coding Fundamentals and Conventions. Various coding scenarios challenge small student groups to apply techniques learned to code claims. (Prerequisite: MEDL 2350 or permission of instructor) Lecture: 1 hour

MEDL 2410 – Medical Insurance Billing - 3 Credits

This course is designed to prepare students for employment as medical insurance specialists in physicians' offices and clinics. Topics to be covered include the claim process, inpatient and outpatient billing, procedural coding and the billing requirements of various healthcare providers. (Prerequisite: OFAD 1120 and corequisite MEDL 2390 and 2400) Lecture: 3 hours

MEDL 2460 – Medical Office Administration - 3 Credits

An advanced course designed to integrate previously learned secretarial skills and to develop proficiency in medical office procedures, such as processing medical records and forms on text editing equipment. Course also includes legal documents encountered in a medical office. (Prerequisite: OFAD 1220 and MEDL 2380) Lecture: 3 hours, Lab: 1 hour

MEDL 2480 – Medical Machine Transcription II - 3 Credits

This is a continuation of the applications of medical transcribing skills and provides a more in-depth understanding of medical terminology. These applications will be performed on the latest electronic equipment available. (Prerequisite: MEDL 2380)
Lecture: 2 hours, Lab: 2 hours

MEDL 2910 – Medical Cooperative Work Experience - 4 Credits

A required field experience in a medical office. The student is placed in a medical office during their last semester for the purpose of observing the operations and routines of that office. The opportunity to perform the tasks required in a medical office is offered to the student. Students participate in a one hour and forty minute weekly seminar on campus.
MEDL 2590 Cooperative Work Experience for Medical Administrative Assistant (Prerequisite: MEDL 2360, 2380 or permission of instructor; Students must a) be enrolled in an office administration program, b) must have completed 24 Credits in an Office Administration program and c) maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or permission of instructor) Lecture: 25 hours, Co-op: 195 hours
