ITAL 0110 – Italian for Business and Travel - 3 Credits
A course for employees of travel agencies, hotels, motels
or inns catering to foreign visitors within the state. This program will also
be of interest to those in wholesale/retail or import/export businesses as well
as employees of social service agencies. Visitors to foreign countries will
find the course beneficial and informative. Emphasis is placed on the living
language, on common verbal expressions for basic communication – greetings,
general phrases, numbers, food, lodging, shopping, transportation, etc. Basic
pronunciation is stressed. Lecture: 3 hours
ITAL 1000 – Basic Spoken Italian I - 3 Credits
An introductory course for the student who has never studied
Italian, emphasizing correct pronunciation of basic vocabulary in everyday conversations,
dialogues for travel and other practical uses. Lecture: 3 hours
ITAL 1100 – Basic Spoken Italian II - 3 Credits
A continuation of Basic Spoken Italian I (ITAL 1000).
(Prerequisite: ITAL 1000 or its equivalent) Lecture: 3 hours
ITAL 1010 – Elementary Italian I - 3 Credits
Elements of the language for the beginning student with little
or no preparation: conversation, pronunciation, reading, writing and grammar.
Cultural aspects of Italy are included in the course. Lecture: 5 hours,

ITAL 1020 – Elementary Italian II - 3 Credits
A continuation of Elementary Italian I (ITAL 1010). (Prerequisite:
ITAL 1010, ITAL 1030 or its equivalent) Lecture: 5 hours, Lab: 1 hour
ITAL 1030 – Elementary Italian I - 3 Credits
Elements of the language: conversation, pronunciation, reading,
writing, and grammar. The cultural aspects of Italy are covered. (Prerequisite:
Prior preparation or permission of instructor) Lecture: 3 hours, Lab: 1 hour
ITAL 1040 – Elementary Italian II - 3 Credits
A continuation of Elementary Italian I (ITAL 1030). (Prerequisite:
ITAL 1030, ITAL 1010 or its equivalent) Lecture: 3 hours, Lab: 1 hour
ITAL 1510 – Conversational Italian I - 3 Credits
A course to further develop the student’s fluency in speaking
Italian. Oral practice includes active use of the language in short dialogues
stressing basic communication and correct pronunciation. The reading of easy
cultural texts also provides material for conversation and discussion. Tapes
are available for individual practice. (Prerequisite: Two years of high school
Italian or one year of college Italian, or the equivalent) Class: 3 hours
ITAL 1520 – Conversational Italian II - 3 Credits
A continuation of Conversational Italian I (ITAL 1510). Conversational
practice and cultural readings and discussions. (Prerequisite: ITAL 1510 or
its equivalent) Class: 3 hours
ITAL 1900 – The Italian Heritage - 3 Credits
Introduction to the cultural development of the Italian people
through the centuries. Guest lecturers and class discussion center on the significant
aspects of Italian literary, social and artistic life as they have contributed
to Western Civilization. Audio-visual aids will present the lives and works
of great figures and are used for appreciation of Italian art, music, food and
wine. Italian films viewed in class are a backdrop for discussing the Italian
cinema. The history and cultural contributions of Italian-Americans are also
included from the discovery of America to mass immigration to present times.

ITAL 2010 – Intermediate Italian I - 3 Credits
Development of the student’s facility in reading and discussing
Italian texts related to culture and literature, supplemented by further work
in grammar, conversation and composition. (Prerequisite: ITAL 1020 or 1040 or
its equivalent) Lecture: 3 hours, Lab: 1 hour
ITAL 2020 – Intermediate Italian II - 3 Credits
A continuation of Intermediate Italian I (ITAL 2010). (Prerequisite:

ITAL 2210 – Italian Conversation and Composition I - 3
Credits
Intensive course in conversation and composition. It will provide through
selected cultural videos, tapes, readings and classroom discussions, an
atmosphere for the development and improvement of speaking and understanding
in the target language. Oral presentations and written compositions will be
required. (Prerequisite: ITAL 2010 or permission of instructor) Lecture: 3

It is a continuation course of Italian Conversation and Composition I (ITAL
