Dental Hygiene (DHYG)

DHYG 1000 – Introduction to Dental Hygiene  - 2 Credits

An introduction to the dental hygiene profession with emphasis on professional requirements and behavior, personal and oral hygiene and dental terminology. At the conclusion of this course students will be prepared to begin the study of dental hygiene theory and practice. Required for acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program.  Lecture: 2 hours

DHYG 1010 – Dental and Oral Anatomy  - 3 Credits

A study of the form and function of the mouth, primary and permanent teeth, head and neck. Particular attention is devoted to crown and root morphology of the permanent dentition, and the structures of the head and neck which affect daily clinical practice. (Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program) Lab: 3 hours, Lecture: 2 hours

DHYG 1020 – Dental Hygiene I  - 3 Credits

The study of fundamental dental hygiene skills and procedures. Topics include instrumentation; infection control; values and practices which underlie professional patient services; preparation for dental hygiene appointments; data collection and assessment; and emergency care. (Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program; Corequisite: DHYG 1030) Lecture: 3 hours

DHYG 1030 – Clinical Dental Hygiene I  - 2 Credits

Application of the principles studied in DHYG 1020: Dental Hygiene I, in the preclinical setting. Students will work with mannequins and laboratory partners. (Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program; Corequisite: DHYG 1020) Lab: 6 hours

DHYG 1040 – Oral Embryology and Histology  - 2 Credits

A study of the microscopic structure and functioning of the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity, and an introduction to the development of the head and neck. Content also includes general body tissues and structures as they relate to head, neck and mouth. (Prerequisite: BIOL 1010, DHYG 1010) Lecture: 2 hours

DHYG 1050 – Dental Hygiene II  - 3 Credits

Continuation of the principles of dental hygiene practice. Course content includes philosophy of prevention, concepts of health and wellness, the dental hygiene treatment plan, oral infection control, sealants and fluorides. Attention is directed towards communication skills, patient management, and development and implementation of educational strategies. (Prerequisites: DHYG 1020, 1030) (Corequisite: DHYG 1060) Lecture: 3 hours

DHYG 1060 – Clinical Dental Hygiene II  - 3 Credits

Continued application of the principles and skills learned in DHYG 1020 and DHYG 1030. Application of the principles studied in DHYG 1050: Dental Hygiene II. (Prerequisites: DHYG 1020, 1030; Corequisite: DHYG 1050) Clinic: 8 hours

DHYG 2010 – Pathology  - 2 Credits

This course is an examination of general and oral diseases. Content includes etiologic agents, tissue response to injury, immunopathology, neoplasia, cardiovascular disease, general diseases with oral manifestations and oral pathology. Consideration is given to specific conditions of importance to oral assessment and care. (Prerequisite: BIOL 1020, DHYG 1040) Lecture: 2 hours

DHYG 2020 – Dental Hygiene III  - 2 Credits

Continuation of the principles of dental hygiene practice. Topics include service to patients with special needs and nutrition, including nutritional counseling. (Prerequisites: DHYG 1050, 1060) (Corequisite: DHYG 2030) Lecture: 2 hours

DHYG 2030 – Clinical Dental Hygiene III  - 4 Credits

Continued application of the principles and skills practiced in DHYG 1050 and DHYG 1060. Application of the principles studied in DHYG 2020: Dental Hygiene III. (Prerequisites: DHYG 1050 and 1060; Corequisites: DHYG 2020, DENT 2010 and 2020) Clinic: 12 hours

DHYG 2040 – Community Dental Health I  - 2 Credits

An introduction to the principles of dental hygiene practice in the community setting. Topics include mechanisms of dental care delivery, cultural diversity, target populations in community-based program, group dental health education and promotion, oral health program planning and research, and critical evaluation of dental health literature. Ability to complete coursework online is required. (Prerequisite: PSYC 2010, DHYG 1060, Corequisite: DHYG 2030) Lecture: 2 hours

DHYG 2045 – Community Dental Health II  - 1 Credit

Application of the principles of dental hygiene practice in the community setting. The student will serve a supervised externship in a community dental health facility. (Prerequisite: DENT 2020, DHYG 1010, 2020 and 2030, Corequisite: DHYG 2070 and SOCS 1010) Clinic: 3 hours

DHYG 2050 – Periodontics  - 3 Credits

Intensive study of the periodontium as it relates to dental hygiene practice. Content includes epidemiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease, assessment of periodontal status, current therapeutic intervention and strategies for maintenance of the periodontal patient. (Prerequisites: BIOL 1020 & 2210, DHYG 1010, 1040, 1050 and 1060) (Corequisites: DHYG 2010, 2020, 2030) Lecture: 3 hours

DHYG 2060 – Dental Hygiene IV  - 2 Credits

Continuation of the principles of dental hygiene practice. Topics include: legal and ethical issues surrounding dental hygiene practice, anxiety and pain control, dental specialties and entering the workforce. (Prerequisite: DHYG 2020, 2030; Corequisite: DHYG 2070) Lecture: 2 hours

DHYG 2070 – Clinical Dental Hygiene IV  - 5 Credits

Continued application of the principles and skills practiced in DHYG 2020 and DHYG 2030. Application of principles studied in DHYG 2060: Dental Hygiene IV. Integration of dental hygiene procedures into a complete dental hygiene service. Prerequisite: DHYG 2030, DHYG 2050) (Corequisite: DHYG 2060) Clinic: 16 hours

DHYG 2090 – Pharmacology for the Dental Hygienist  - 3 Credits

A study of the principles of pharmacology as they relate to oral health care. Course content includes indications and contraindications for use, pharmacological effects, adverse reactions, and interaction of drugs. Special consideration is given to drugs commonly used in dentistry, as well as oral implications of drugs. (Prerequisite: BIOL 1020, DHYG 1020) (Corequisite: DHYG 2010, 2030) Lecture: 3 hours
