DAST 1010 – Oral Biology I - 2 Credits
This course is an introduction to oral and maxillofacial anatomy
and physiology. Particular attention is devoted to the structure and function of
the teeth, periodontium, temporomandibular joint, trigeminal nerve and external
carotid artery. (Prerequisite: Enrollment in Dental Assisting) Lecture: 2 hours
DAST 1020 – Preventive Dentistry - 2 Credits
Philosophy and methods of preventing oral disease. Topics include
the natural history of caries and periodontal disease, intervention models and strategies,
professional examination and charting, oral physiotherapy, fluorides, sealants and
nutrition. (Prerequisite: Enrollment in Dental Assisting) Lecture: 2 hours
DAST 1030 – Chairside Dental Assisting I - 4 Credits
Introduction to the methods and techniques of assisting the dental
operator and to infection control protocol. Content includes roles and relationships
of members of the oral health care team; the preparation, use and care of dental
instruments and equipment; patient management; basic microbiology and infection
control procedures. (Prerequisite: Enrollment in Dental Assisting Program)
Lecture: 3 hours, Lab: 4 hours
DAST 1040 – Oral Biology II - 2 Credits
Continuation of DAST 1010, Oral Biology I. This course covers
fundamental concepts of oral and maxillofacial histology, embryology and pathology
as well as dental and medical emergencies in the dental office. The development,
clinical appearance, microscopic structure and functioning of the hard and soft
tissues of the oral cavity, jaws and face are covered as well as current theories
of the etiology and development of common diseases of the oral cavity. (Prerequisites:
DAST 1010) Lecture: 2 hours
DAST 1050 – Chairside Dental Assisting II - 5 Credits
Continuation of DAST 1030; Chairside Dental Assisting I. Considers
methods and techniques of assisting with specialty procedures in endodontics, oral
and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and
prosthodontics. The student will be assigned to dental treatment facilities for
supervised practice of clinical skills. Prerequisites: BIOL 1070, DAST 1010, 1020,
1030, DENT 2010, 2020, 2225) Lecture: 2 hours, Lab: 4 hours, Clinical: 312 hours
over 16-week semester
DAST 1060 – Dental Office Procedures - 2 Credits
Principles and practices of the dental office. Topics include telephone, patient,
and appointment management; the preparation, use and care of office and treatment
records; third party payment; supply and inventory control; and the legal and ethical
standards required of professional dental personnel. (Corequisite: DAST 1050 or
consent of instructor) Lecture: 2 hours
