Admission Requirements

The Community College of Rhode Island has a policy of open admissions which gives all Rhode Island residents an opportunity for education beyond the high school level. Students who plan to attend CCRI with the intention of transferring to a four-year college or university can best prepare themselves in high school by taking college preparatory courses and obtaining a solid foundation in the humanities, language, arts, mathematics and sciences.

If a prospective applicant has reached the age of sixteen years, the compulsory school attendance age in Rhode Island, and has earned a high school diploma or its equivalent, the applicant may be admitted to a certificate or degree program at the Community College of Rhode Island. The equivalent of a high school diploma is defined as follows: demonstrated ability in passing all tests required to earn a certificate of high school equivalency (GED) by the Rhode Island Department of Education.

Although a high school diploma or its equivalent is not a general admission requirement of the College provided the student is 18 years of age, it should be noted that intercollegiate athletic participants, applicants for financial aid or veterans' benefits and in some cases students applying for transfer to some senior colleges must show evidence of a high school diploma or its equivalent.

A high school diploma or its equivalent is required for admission to the following programs: Nursing, Clinical Laboratory Technology, Radiography (X-Ray), Cardio-Respiratory Care, Dental Hygiene, Dental Assisting, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Medical Resonance Imaging, Physical Therapist Assistant, Renal Dialysis Technology, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Phlebotomy and Therapeutic Massage. In addition, individual departments may have specific admission requirements that students must meet. Since many of the above-mentioned programs have specific space limitations for admission, it is to the student's benefit to complete special admission requirements as soon as possible.

All transcripts submitted for admission and financial aid must be official and therefore sent to the College directly from the respective institution. Candidates applying with a State Equivalency Diploma should arrange to have a transcript of the equivalency scores sent to the College from the General Equivalency Center. Equivalencies from correspondence schools are not acceptable.

In the case of secondary education received outside of the U.S., transcripts must be evaluated to be equivalent to U.S. secondary school completion. A list of authorized agencies which evaluate foreign transcripts may be obtained by contacting the Office of Enrollment Services.

There are formal application procedures that must be followed. Interested persons should contact the Office of Enrollment Services at (401) 825-2285 in Warwick, at (401) 333-7300 in Lincoln or at (401) 455-6060 in Providence or complete the application in the back of this catalog. An online application is also available. Go to www.ccri.edu/admissions and click on "Apply for Admissions Online."

Full responsibility for the forwarding of application materials and transcripts together with a $20 application fee rests with the applicant.

The College Board Scholastic Assessment Tests (SAT I, II) are not required for admission to the College.

Special Program for Students Enrolled in Secondary Schools

Running Start

High school seniors who wish to study at the Community College of Rhode Island on a full-time basis during the day may be eligible to earn college credit and credit toward high school graduation simultaneously. The Running Start Program is designed for high school students who have demonstrated academic achievement and maturity necessary to enroll in college courses during the senior year of high school. For further information on eligibility requirements, call 333-7172.

High School Enrichment Program

Community College of Rhode Island works in cooperation with secondary schools in the State to provide high school students with educational opportunities not otherwise available to them.

High school students who wish to take Community College courses are required to complete a High School Enrichment form. These forms are available in high school guidance departments. Placement is dependent upon high school guidance counselor and principal recommendation and approval and on the College instructor’s agreement as well as seat availability. Generally this program is limited to high school juniors and seniors. For further information, contact the Office of Enrollment Services, 825-2285 in Warwick, 333-7300 in Lincoln or 455-6060 in Providence.

High School/Community College Partnership Programs

The High School/Community College Partnership Program, formerly the Tech Prep Associate Degree Program, provides every student an opportunity to participate in a seamless educational system that includes academic and technical knowledge and skills required for continued education and the workforce. Students enrolled in articulated high school classes promoting student centered, project based learning experiences receive a solid academic foundation to prepare them for success in college.

The High School/Community College Partnership Program offers high school students the opportunity to earn college course credits while in high school. Students enrolled in selective high school courses that meet Community College of Rhode Island curriculum requirements obtain college credits upon successful completion of the high school course and are guaranteed admission to specific college programs at CCRI. Interested high school students should contact their guidance counselor as soon as possible so they may enroll in appropriate classes while in high school. For further information, contact the Office of Enrollment Services at CCRI’s Flanagan Campus, 333-7300.

Baccalaureate Bound

Baccalaureate Bound is a competitive program at the Community College of Rhode Island designed to appeal to college prep students who plan to earn at least a bachelor's degree after graduating from high school.

The program offers the first two years of a baccalaureate degree in a supportive environment at an affordable cost. Baccalaureate Bound students will enroll in special honors classes, participate in extracurricular enrichment activities and receive personal assistance in transferring to a four-year college or university after earning an associate degree at CCRI.

Because CCRI has transfer/articulation agreements or dual acceptance programs with nearly 75 colleges and universities in New England and beyond, students will find that in many cases transfer of credit is guaranteed provided they comply with certain agreed upon criteria, such as maintaining a certain grade point average or enrolling in certain courses. For any student who wishes to transfer to a college that has not entered into a standard transfer agreement with CCRI, Baccalaureate Bound Program administrators will contact the student's college choice and attempt to arrange a customized guarantee of acceptance.

For more information, contact Dr. L. William Cheney at 825-2222.
