Sample Career Plan

Use this sample career plan as a guide to develop a personal plan that is tailored to your career goal.

Sample Goal Statements
The following are examples of potential career goals.

To make a career choice by August 2003.
To prepare myself to enter employment as a clinical lab technologist by June2003.
To decide on a major that matches my aptitudes and personality. Decision to be resolved by Dec 2002.

Sample Strategy/Action Plan
In this section you identify and develop steps you'll take to reach your goal. As you write down the actions to take, remember to make your plan S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and with a Timeline)

Spring Semester
- January/February
  - Enroll in PSYC 1110, Lincoln Campus.
  - Commit to completing all required assignments for PSYC 1110 and all other classes.
  - Do an informal "career satisfaction" survey of people I know and ask them how satisfied they are in their career. Use this information to understand what makes people happy in their jobs.
  - Make a habit of reading the Jobs & Education section in the Sunday Providence Journal (Projo)
  - Attend Advising/Counseling workshop: Planning for Success on 2/4, Lincoln Campus.
  - Apply for Financial Aid for fall semester by 3/1
- March/April
  - Enroll in PSYC 1110, Lincoln Campus.
  - Commit to completing all required assignments for PSYC 1110 and all other classes.

  - Take a summer course in a subject that I'm interested in knowing more about.
  - Get familiar with the Internet as a tool for career information. Go to CCRI Computer Lab at least 3 times to do career research.
  - Identify 2-3 "Success" qualities I will work at developing during the summer session.
  - Get a summer job to help pay for school expenses: read each Sunday's Help Wanted; check the Co-op/ Placement Office's Job Direct web site; check the Dept. of Labor and Training's job listings; Look-up monster.com; let everyone know that I am looking for a job.
- July/August
  - Go to the library and identify a professional journal in the _______ field. Read at least 3 articles.
  - Talk to people about their careers at every opportunity. (8-10 people).
  - Work hard toward achieving an "A" in my summer course. Study at least one-hour everyday.
  - Make an appointment for an Informational Interview with a professional in the ________ field.
  - Etc...
