2009-10 CCRI Women’s Basketball Pre-season Outlook

The 2009-2010 CCRI women’s basketball team has new coaches and new players this season. Last year’s 23-8 team that made an “Elite Eight” appearance in the national tournament has graduated its top eight players. To continue a run to nationals this year, the squad faces a new set of challenges.

Head Coach Kevin Monagle begins his second season at the helm of the CCRI women’s basketball program. New assistant coaches John Klitzner, an experienced coach at the NCAA collegiate and high school levels, and Cassie Malec, coach of the AAU Rhode Island Breakers, will join returning assistant coaches Laura Mahoney and Sue Pacheco to help lead the team.

The only returning Lady Knight who played any minutes last year is sophomore shooting guard Kate Rachiele (Hope, R.I.). Three returning forwards who were unable to compete last year due to injury are Alyssa O’Neil (Johnston, R.I.), Michaela Lima (Cranston, RI) and Lori Bergeron (Jaffrey, N.H.).

The Lady Knights will welcome five new players for the 2009-10 season. Noel Bullock (Greenbelt, Md.), a point guard, and Teighlor Clare-Kearney (Manchester, Conn), a combo guard, will lead the backcourt. They will be joined by Cassie Novicky (New Milford, Conn.), a shooting guard/small forward, Rajvi Jarvis (Stratford, Conn.), a guard/forward, and Ashley Fry (South Kingstown, R.I.), a shooting guard.

“We need to be quick and superb defensively for us to be successful,” Monagle said. “My players and staff look forward to a completely new challenge.”
