2009 Women's Outlook
Fourth-year coach Deborah Panzica is looking to continue to build on the foundation that was built during the Fall 2008 season for the CCRI Women’s Tennis Team. 2007 marked the inaugural season of Women’s Tennis at CCRI and there were certainly struggles. However, with three possible returning players this year (versus zero returners last year) the biggest task will be building a competitive schedule. “Last year we took 3 players to the National Championship Tournament. We competed well and it was a tremendous experience for the players. This year we look to round out the roster, add a schedule, and progress to a level where we can compete for one of the top three National spots.” It really was a matter of the experience that the players had prior to going to the tournament. We need to impress upon our players the importance of the doubles matches and how they can make the difference in the standings. This year we will look to expand our schedule and go to Nationals as a known quantity.
The team, playing its home matches at the outdoor courts located at Winman Junior High School in Warwick, will take up some Mid-Atlantic school invitations to play against them owing to the fact that there are no other DIII 2-year school programs in the Northeast. The season is a short one due to the New England climate. One additional quirk for the Women’s team is that, although the season is in the Fall semester, the National Tournament is scheduled in Tucson, Arizona in May, 2008.
2009 Men's Outlook
Fourth-year head coach John Panzica is looking to continue to build on the foundation that was built during the Spring 2008 season for the CCRI Men’s Tennis Team. Returning three players from last year’s team, the incoming class looks promising. "Last year we captured the Region XXI (New England) Championship. We participated in the National Tournament again last year and it was a tremendous experience for the players. We played well, but our results were not what we expected. This year we look to progress to a level where we can compete with the National participants. It really was a matter of the number of matches that we had and the experience that the players had prior to going to the tournament. This year we will look to expand our schedule and go to Nationals as a contender." says Panzica.
The team, playing its home matches at the outdoor courts located at Winman Junior High School in Warwick, will seek to schedule matches against some Mid-Atlantic schools during the Spring semester break in classes, and travel to upstate New York to take on other Division III schools. We will try to see if we can get some of them to come to us as well. The season is a short one due to the New England climate. Practices start indoors and outdoor practices will begin as soon as the weather breaks. The match schedule will start in March and it is basically over by the first middle of April, with the National Tournament scheduled for the second week in May in Plano, Texas.
