Liz Afonso enters her fourth season as head coach of the women’s softball team. Over the past three seasons she has compiled a 76-28 win-loss record and twice received the Region XXI Coach of the Year Award in 2010 and 2011.
Before taking the reins as head coach, Afonso served as the program’s assistant coach for nine years. She helped lead the Lady Knights to regional championship titles in four of her last seven seasons as an assistant. The Lady Knights have continued on that winning path as Region XXI Champions in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and district runner-up in 2010.
Afonso has more than 26 years of coaching experience at the middle school, high school and amateur levels. She previously coached the Lincoln Middle School team to three state championships and four division titles in five years at the helm. She also coached her ASA Travel Team to a top 10 finish in the Amateur Softball Association of America National Championship.
Afonso is a guidance counselor and mathematics teacher at Narragansett High School and holds a master's degree in counseling from Providence College and a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a concentration in secondary education from Rhode Island College. She lives in Smithfield, R.I., with her husband, Kevin, and her two children.
Kiara Bentonreturns for her fourth year as an assistant coach. She has served as team manager and statistician and will continue to assist the coaching staff by maintaining the home scorebook and tracking team statistics along with other responsibilities. Benton played softball for the Cougars of North Providence High School and travel ball for the Rhode Island Panthers and Rhode Island Psychos. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Johnson & Wales University in equine management. She owns and manages River’s Edge Equestrian Center and resides in Foster, R.I.
Caitlin Montella, who played softball for CCRI during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, is serving as an assistant coach for her second season. She works with the Lady Knights during practices and assist with team fundraising efforts.
During her career as a Lady Knight, Montella batted .394 with 39 hits in 99 at bats, tallying eight doubles, 27 RBIs and 27 runs scored. She received All-Region XXI honors as a sophomore. She graduated from CCRI in 2009 with an associate degree and lives in Warwick, R.I.
