The CCRI Men’s Soccer team avenged their first loss of the season to Region XXI foe and #12 ranked Massasoit beating the Warriors 2-1 in a thrilling double overtime victory. CCRI took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal by Ezekial Payne (Warwick, RI) but by the end of regulation the game was tied 1-1. At the end of the first overtime the score was still 1-1. The Knights pulled it out the victory in the second overtime to win 2-1 on a "Header" by Todd Leveillee (North Scituate, RI) centered to him off a free kick from Jose Grajeles (Central Falls, RI) . "What a Finish!" exclaimed Coach Gaspar. With the win CCRI improves their record to 4-2-1.

CCRI Women’s Soccer Team "Clubs" Sacred Heart

The CCRI Women’s Soccer Team thrashed the Sacred Heart University Club team 11-0. The Knights attempted to "call of the dogs" after they jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the end of the first half. However, in the second half it was much of the same as the final score was tallied at 11-0. The Knights were led by Sophomore Lindsay Laurie (Warwick, RI) who scored two goals and had two assists, while Cassie Cooney (Central Falls, RI) and Katie Finn (Warwick, RI) who also had two goals but with one assist. Short-handed CCRI Volleyball Team comes-up short at Navy Prep

The CCRI Knights Volleyball team was playing without two of their starters Kimiyo Garcia (East Providence, RI) and Stephanie Maxwell (Warwick, RI) and during the match they lost another in Outside Hitter Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA). Full-strength CCRI could have given a very good Navy Prep team a run for their money. Unfortunately that was not the case. The knights gave it their all but lost the match 20-30, 21-30 and 25-30 as they showed steady improvement but could not get over the hump. With the loss CCRI falls to 11-7, they look to bounce back this Friday and Saturday as they go on the road to play in the Oakland College Tournament.

CCRI Athletics Weekend round-up 9/23-9/25

CCRI Men’s Soccer

NOTE: CCRI Men’s soccer season record became 2-2-1 before the Monroe game due to ineligible players from Mass Bay that competed against CCRI resulting in a Mass Bay forfeit.

1-0 contest. Co-Captain Nick Medeiros (Central Falls, RI) scored in the thirty sixth minute of the first half assisted by freshman Ivan Torres (Pawtucket, RI). From there Goalkeeper Sidney Boaventura (Pawtucket, RI) and the Knights Defensemen put the Tribunes from Monroe on lock-down to secure the shutout and the victory. The Knights raise their record to 3-2-1 with the victory. They look continue their winning ways this Wednesday at Region XXI rival Massasoit CC.

CCRI Women’s Soccer

The CCRI Women’s soccer team also traveled to Rochester, NY to play the #4 ranked Defending National Champion Monroe CC Tribunes. The high powered Tribunes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half but the Knights fought back with a goal by freshman forward Krystal Sousa (Fall River, MA) to cut the lead to 2-1 by halftime. CCRI fought valiantly in the second half but couldn’t tie the game. With the loss CCRI falls to 4-2 they look to bounce back as they have a busy week: home against Sacred Heart JV Tuesday at 4pm, at Region XXI foe Massasoit Wednesday at 4pm, home versus Cincinnati State Tech, Friday, and home versus #6 ranked CCBC Catonsville Sunday at Noon.

CCRI Women’s Volleyball

A short-handed CCRI team traveled to Batavia, NY to play in the Kaminna Allen Tournament at Genesee CC. The Knights went into the weekend without their starting Setter April Oberelman (Woonsocket, RI), starting Outside Hitter Kimiyo Garcia (East Providence, RI) for a match, and Outside Hitter Stephanie Maxwell (Warwick, RI) for the final two games. This forced Coach Deangelis to shuffle the Knights line-up which resulted in inconsistent play. Thought hey were short-handed the Knights still fought tooth and nail against top competition. On Friday CCRI lost a tough three-setter to Jamestown CC 20-30, 30-27, and 13-15, but then beat Onondaga CC 30-14 and 30-22. On Saturday CCRI fell to Mott 26-30 and 19-30, top 25 tournament host Genesee 17-30 and 21-30, and to #20 ranked Hagerstown 18-30 and 20-30. CCRI highlights include Outside Hitter Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) who had six aces and 70 digs, Middle Hitter Sonja Nealy (Woonsocket, RI) had 23 blocks, 30 kills, and 10 digs, and Outside/Middle Hitter Abby Hummel (Warwick, RI) had 10 blocks, 12 kills, 35 digs, 6 aces and 26 assists. With the losses CCRI falls to 11-6 for the season. They look to bounce back this week at Navy Prep on Tuesday and in the Oakland College Tournament this weekend.

CCRI Cross Country

CCRI men’s Cross Country Team finished a strong third place against some quality four year schools and Varsity Programs at the Ray Dwyer Invitational Saturday at Goddard Park. Captain Chris Farrell (Lincoln, RI) led his team with a great 3rd place individual finish in a time of 28:20 over the 5 mile course, a full minute faster then his 2004 time over the same course. Bryan Galvin (Seekonk, MA) placed 16th in a time of 28:59, over 2:00 minutes faster then his 2004 race. Joe Hannon (Gloucester, RI) placed 20th in a time of 29:09, over 3:00 faster then his 2004 race. Luis Rodriguez (Lincoln, RI) finished in 31st in a time of 30:30, followed by Ron Guenard (Cumberland, RI) in 34th with a time of 30:13, and. In 64th place was Nick Weinhofer (New Foundland, CA) with a time of 36:18. On the women’s side Sherilyn Nicholas (Taunton, MA) placed 32nd in the women’s race in a time of 22:30 over the 5k course. Nicholas went off course by 100m along with some other girls. If she had not done this she would have broken the 22:00 mark for the first time ever. The men’s team has strong runners who take turns leading the team. Hannon the first meet of the year, Guenard at UMass Dartmouth and Captain Farrell this week. This shows me how tight this has become.

Knights Start Late but Finish Strong to Beat Leslie 3-2

Transportation problems hampered the Knights as they arrived late to their match at Lesley University. Due to the late arrival the Knights started the match down 2-0. The deficit could not stop the Knights from winning.

In the first contested game of the evening, CCRI made-up for lost time by thrashing the Lynx 30-14. In the second game coach DeAngelis got some of the reserves into the action they pounced on the opportunity and won the second match 30-14. In the third match the Knights made quick work of the Lynx winning 15-5. The final match scores were 0-30, 0-30, 30-14, 30-14, and 15-5. CCRI improves their record to 10-2 on the season.

The Knights were led by Middle Hitter Sonja Nealy (Woonsocket, RI) and Outside Hitter Kimiyo Garcia (East Providence, RI) who helped pound the Lynx into submission with their devastating offensive attack.

The Knights look to continue their winning ways this Saturday and Sunday at the Kiminna Allen Invitational Tournament at Genesee CC in Batavia, NY against #20 ranked Hagerstown and highly touted host Genesee CC.

Knights Tame Bulldogs 6-0 improve record to 4-1

The CCRI Women’s Soccer team tamed their Region XXI rival Bulldogs of Dean College 6-0 to improve their overall record to 4-1, while improving their Region record to 2-0 and 1-0 in Division.

The scoring barrage was led by Sophomore Lindsay Laurie (Warwick, RI) who scored two goals, and Captains Jami Elliott (Cumberland, RI) and Sarah Lynch (Tiverton, RI) who each had a goal and an assist. Also contributing were Tanekar Alexander (D’Abadie, Trinidad) and Cassie Cooney (Central Falls, RI) with one goal each and Jessica Mullett (Woonsocket, RI), Krystal Sousa (Fall river, MA), and Ashley Frey (East Greenwich, RI) all added in an assist.

As the score would indicate this game was not very closely contested as CCRI jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. The Knights increased their lead to 6-0 by the end of the game by keeping the ball in Bulldog territory for pretty much the entire game. The most telling statistic of the game besides the six CCRI goals may have been that fact the Knight Goalkeeper Anne Kineke (East Greenwich, RI) had no saves which means Dean had no shots on goal in the shutout.

CCRI looks to build on this victory as they travel to Rochester, NY on Saturday to play in a showdown against perennial powerhouse Monroe CC at high noon. This game will be an early indication of where the Knights stand as far as their post-season hopes. Go Knights!

Knights Fight Hard but Fall Short to Cougars 2-0

The CCRI Men’s Soccer team lost another close game yesterday to the Cougars of Manchester CC 2-0. Offense seems to be the bugaboo for the Knights this year as they have only tallied one goal in five games, though their defense is definitely very solid. To make matters worse on the offensive side they were without one of their catalysts Ivan Boaventura (Pawtucket, RI).

This was a very close and hard fought game by the Knights as Goalkeeper Sidney Boaventura (Pawtucket, RI) and the CCRI defense held the visiting cougars scoreless in the first half. However, The Knights were unable to capitalize on the Manchester CC defensive mistakes. In the second half Manchester showed why they are the leading offensive team in Region XXI as they did want CCRI couldn’t do in the first half as they capitalized on a couple of defensive mistakes which led to their two goals.

Though they did not score The Knights are showing signs of breaking-out of their scoring slump as they are getting more scoring opportunities. With the loss The Knights fall to 1-3-1 for the season. CCRI looks to bounce back this Saturday as they travel to Rochester, NY to play Monroe CC.

MANCHESTER (2): Jackson, Blamo. CCRI (0). Halftime 0-0. Saves -- Wyman, MCC, 4; Boaventura, CCRI, 7. Records -- CCRI 1-3-1; MCC 5-3.
