Championship Game

Ashley Vachon (West Warwick, RI) pitched three great
innings but it wasn’t enough as she allowed two unearned runs and got the
hard luck loss. Co-Captain Jen Dupont (Lincoln, RI) pitched three scoreless
innings of relief and struck out three. Offensively the Knights were led by
Co-Captain Jenna Peters (Lincoln, RI) who went 2-3 and Nicole Brierley
(Lincoln, RI) also went 2-3 for the game. Once again the Knights scattered
eight hits but could not score a run in the tough 2-0 loss. With the victory
Orange County CC advances to the Northeast District Championship next week

leader with 17 career victories, in addition set a single-season strikeout
record with 80 strikeouts (ranked #17 in the nation), and career strikeout
leader with 142 strikeouts. Dupont also holds the top two ERA’s in CCRI
History with 1.51 as a freshman and 1.57 as a sophomore for a CCRI career
best 1.54 ERA. Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) set the single-season hit

Game 1
CCRI 8 Massasoit CC 0
Ashley Vachon (West Warwick, RI) pitched an awesome game
allowing just one hit over five shutout innings with three strikeouts to
earn her sixth victory of the year. Offensively the Knights were led by
Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) who went 3-3 with four RBI and a run scored
and in doing so became the CCRI single-season hit leader with 44 hits this
season breaking the mark set by Lindsay Cavanagh in 2005. Also

but got the tough luck loss pitching seven innings allowing three runs, only

Consolation Bracket Final/Region XXI Title game Sunday at 10:00am (Orange
County CC is not from Region XXI therefore the highest Region XXI seed left
in the Tournament will be the winner of the 10:00am game. The winner of the
Tournament Championship advances to the District championship at Region
XIX).
Knights split with Dean 11-5 and 0-6 and earn bid
into Region XXI Championship
The CCRI Knights men’s baseball team only had to win a
single game in a doubleheader versus Region XXI rival Dean College to earn a
bid into the Region XXI Championship series versus UConn-Avery Point May 6th-7th
at UCAP. The Knights did just that winning the first game of the
doubleheader 11-5 and Dean won the second game 6-0.
Game 1
CCRI 11 Dean 5
Michael Shuckerow (Milford, CT) pitched a very good game
throwing five innings allowing five runs, four earned, while striking out

be held this weekend May 6 and 7 at UCAP.
Game 2
CCRI 0 Dean 6
CCRI could only muster three hits of Dean College’s Ken
Ryan who kept them off balance all day. Co-Captain Seth Desautel
(Cumberland, RI) went 1-2 in the loss. Frank Mazza (North Kingstown, RI)
took the loss pitching five innings allowing four earned runs on five hits
while striking out five. The Knights had already secured the Championship
bid which also could help explain the lack of offense in the second game.
The Game Schedule for The Region XXI Championship this
weekend will be released later this week.

Kara Serapiglia (Johnston, RI) who was 3-4 with a double, three runs scored

doubleheader and improve to 15-5
The CCRI women’s fast-pitch softball team outlasted the
Pride of Springfield College JV squad 8-5 and 11-10 to improve their record
to 15-5 on the season. On the mound they are led by Co-captain Jen Dupont

not too far behind her with a .566 batting average ranking her #4 in the
nation, with 30 hits including four doubles a triple and three homeruns.
Defensively the Knights have looked to Sophomore Christina Campopiano
(Johnston, RI) who has saved countless runs with her sparkling glove at the
"hot corner" (3B).
Game 1
CCRI 8 Springfield 5
Jen Dupont (Lincoln, RI) picked-up her team-leading
seventh win pitching seven innings allowing only two earned runs and
striking out five. Offensively the Knights were led by Mallery Andreozzi

(Swansea, MA) was 2-3 2ith two doubles an RBI and a run scored, and Kara
Serapiglia (Johnston, RI) also pick-up two hits with two runs scored. Also

RBI double and two runs scored, and Christina Campopiano (Johnston, RI) also
added an RBI double and a run scored.
Game 2
CCRI 11 Springfield 10
Amy Lemmon (North Attleboro, MA) pitched 5 1/3 solid
innings but was a victim of a barrage of "Texas league hits" (bloopers) and
defensive miscues that helped Springfield amass 10 runs seven earned, the
numbers can be misleading because Lemmon pitched very well. Ashley Vachon
(West Warwick, RI) was able to get the victory, her fourth of the year, as
she pitched 12/3 innings of one-hit scoreless ball. Offensively the Knights
were led by Kara Serapiglia (Johnston, RI) was 4-5 with two RBI and a run

by designated player Nicole Brierley leaving the bases loaded for Lindsay
Laurie who singled home the tying and go ahead run to give the Knights the

Knights rip Rams 7-2 to improve record to 2-2 on the
season
The CCRI Knights Tennis team defeated the Rams of
Springfield Tech CC 7-2 to improve their record to 2-2 on the season.
CCRI carried the momentum gained against the
Holyoke squad from the day before and defeated an improved Springfield
Technical CC team. Springfield only brought 4 players, defaulting three
positions from the start of the match. CCRI could have taken this beginning
point and really let things go, but first and second singles dominated to
win the match outright, posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory in first singles by
Sophomore Ben Tabor of Seekonk, MA and a 6-4, 6-4 victory in second singles
by freshman Andrew Parente of Smithfield, RI.
CCRI Freshmen Heather Neal of Lincoln, RI saw action in
her first match of the season and overcame the inexperience of both her and
her opponent to post a respectable 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) defeat to her
opponent Matthew Reilly of STCC. Both Neal and Reilly are new to
tennis and needed assistance on the scoring and, in particular, the scoring
of the match tiebreak (also called super tiebreak) in place of the third
set.
CCRI Sophomore Drew Hochman of Cranston and Freshman
Ashley Frey of E. Greenwich posted their first victories of the season.
Hochman teamed up with fellow sophomore, Smithfield native Jason Garrahan of
CCRI and they posted a 10-6 pro-set (first to 10 games, win by two) victory.
Frey teamed up with fellow freshman and Smithfield native Andrew Parente and
they posted a 10-4 pro-set (first to 10 games, win by two) victory.
CCRI maintained the momentum gained on Friday by carrying
through and defeating an improved Springfield Tech team. The weather played
a factor as well, as rain threatened to impact the matches, but the first
drops started falling as the players were picking up their bags to walk off
the court. Springfield Tech came to play, and play they did, getting in all
six matches that were playable with the four players they were able to
bring. The Knights look forward to the Region XXI Tournament this weekend.
The week off will do the team well as several players are nursing nagging
injuries. We will have some light practice, focusing on preparing for the
weekend. All of The Knights are looking forward to the weekend and
optimistic about the team’s chances to get to the Nationals in Texas!
Complete scores:

Knights fall 6-3 but earn respect versus Holyoke
CCRI used the experience gained against the Holyoke squad
from a week earlier and took the match to their home courts. The Knights
were able to turn over the results in three of the nine matches, taking
third and sixth singles, as well as second doubles. Freshman Andrew Parente
(Smithfield, RI) led the Knights with a victory in both third singles and,
teamed up with fellow freshman (and Smithfield native) Christopher Rich to
take second doubles. Both matches were closely contested and Andrew and
Chris showed some great resolve to pull out their matches.
In the most interesting match of the day, Sophomore
Brittney Godbout of Cranston, RI outlasted her opponent, Nick Chavez
of HCC, the very same Chavez that she lost to a week ago. Godbout
showed great perseverance and patience, outlasting Chavez 6-7 (7-2),
6-3, 1-0 (10-3). Chavez took the opening set in a tie-break, with
Godbout double faulting her serve on set point in the tie-break. Most people
would have let that get to them, but not Godbout. She stormed out to a 3-0
lead in the second set, never looking back as she closed out the set 6-3 and
dominated in the match tiebreak (also known as a super tiebreak – first one
to 10 points, win by two), 10-3.
The drama of the match was stirred-up by Holyoke Head
Coach Steve Roswicz. Roswicz at one point said that if Nick
Chavez were to split sets with Brittney Godbout that he would commit
suicide. It turned out to be a bit of melodrama as he clearly didn’t follow
through on his threat. Bobby Riggs and Billy Jean King taught us a long time
ago not to make such ridiculous claims they will come back to haunt you.
Freshman Christopher Rich of Smithfield teamed up with
fellow freshman (and Smithfield native) Andrew Parente to also reverse their
score from last Friday’s second doubles contest against Jay Danek and
Matt Lentes of HCC. Last Friday Rich and Parente fell 11-9 in a
10-game pro-set (first to 10 games, win by two). This Friday, the results
were reversed as Rich and Parente persevered 11-9 in the same format,
against the same opponents!

Campus in Warwick. From there they will travel to UConn-Avery Point for a
doubleheader on Sunday the 23rd starting at 1:00pm.
Go Knights!!!
Knights handled by Holyoke 9-0
The CCRI tennis team was outmatched by a more-experienced
Holyoke squad that has been playing all winter and has even taken a couple
of trips South to get some early season matches in. Holyoke was playing in
at least their sixth match while it was only CCRI’s second match. The
experience was still a very good one for the CCRI team. The Knights showed
them that we are not that far off from the defending Region XXI Champions of
Holyoke CC considering how competitive the matches actually were.
All the matches were a lot closer than the scores would
suggest as the CCRI tennis team fought hard against the defending Region XXI
champions, Holyoke CC. In fact Jason Garrahan (Smithfield, RI) and Brittney
Godbout (Cranston, RI) both led their singles matches in the first set,
getting an early break, but finally succumbing to the experience of their
HCC opponents. Second Doubles Chris Rich (Lincoln, RI) and Andrew Parente
(Smithfield, RI) exchanged breaks back and forth and actually served for the
match at 9-8 in the 10 game pro-set, before succumbing to the greater
experience of their Holyoke opponents. First doubles Ben Tabor (Seekonk, MA)
and Drew Hochman (Cranston, RI) were on serve in was shaping up to be the
fiercest battle of the afternoon until Hochman retired with severe cramps in
both calves.
Head Coach John Panzica said: "We faced stiff,
experienced competition but appear to be poised to return this Friday in a
rematch with the defending Region XXI Champions on their home turf, ready to
take back some of our pride and demonstrate that this year’s tournament will
not be a cake-walk for Holyoke CC." The Knights are showing that they will
not back down from any opponent which is always the first step on the road
to success for the CCRI tennis program.

Knights split doubleheader with Region XXI rival Dean
7-6 and 5-4
Game 1
CCRI 6 Dean 7
Ashley Vachon (West Warwick, RI) pitched a very good game
though she got the loss. Over six innings she allowed just four earned runs
while striking out four. Offensively the Knights were led by Heather Lynch
(Warwick, RI) who was 2-3 with a triple and a double, two RBI and a run
scored, Alyse Fram (Lincoln, RI) was also 2-3 with two singles with two RBI.
Co-Captain Jenna Peters (Lincoln, RI) went 2-4 with two singles an RBI and a
run scored and Kara Serapiglia (Johnston, RI) was 2-4 with two singles and a
run scored.
Dean got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the
second CCRI answered with three runs in the fourth and three runs in the
sixth. After a twenty minute rain delay Dean rallied for two in the sixth
and three in the bottom of the seventh to earn the victory. This was a great
game but tough loss for the Knights who fall to 8-5 for the season.
Game 2
CCRI 5 Dean 4
Amy Lemmon (North Attleboro, MA) pitched an excellent
game allowing just two earned runs over seven innings striking out five to
earn her third victory of the season. Offensively the Knights were led by
Jasmine Bonanca (Swansea, MA) who was 2-3 with a triple and a single with an
RBI and a run scored and Christina Campopiano (Johnston, RI) who was 2-4
with a triple and a double. Kara Serapiglia (Johnston, RI) was 2-4 with a
double, a single with an RBI and a run scored, Nicole Brierley (Lincoln, RI)
went 2-2 with two singles an RBI and a run scored, and Co-captain Jenna
Peters (Lincoln, RI) added an RBI double with a run scored.
Another great game that started with both teams scoring
one run each in the first inning, both teams remained silent in the second
third and fourth and each scored one more in the fifth. The Knights put
together five hits in the top of the sixth to score three runs. Jasmine
Bonanca led off the inning with a single and was batted on a single from
Heather Lynch, Lynch later scored on a double from Jenna Peters and the
inning was capped off by Nicole Brierley singling home Jenna Peters giving
the Knights a 5-2 lead. Dean answered back in the bottom of the sixth with
two runs making the score 5-4 in the seventh. In the top of the seventh the
Knights got two hits but some great defense from Dean prevented the Knights
from scoring an insurance run as Christina Campopiano tripled with Alyse
Fram on first but Fram was cut down at the plate on an excellent relay throw
from centerfield to shortstop Amy Grail to catcher Tiffany
Integlia. Dean was able to get runners on first and third in the bottom
of the seventh with two outs but could not tie the game as Amy Lemmon struck
out Kathleen Bruce looking to preserve the victory. With the win the
knights improve their record to 9-5 on the season and 3-1 in Region XXI.
The Knights next games will be Tuesday April 18th
versus Massasoit CC at their home field Winslow Park in Warwick. The Knights

Marvin Owens (Bridgeport, CT) was voted First Team NJCAA
Division II men’s basketball All-American, adding yet another accomplishment
to his impressive resume. Owens was earlier voted First Team All-Region XXI.

Off the court Owens is a polite a jovial young man who
acts as leader to his teammates. Marvin always encourages teammates to do
the right thing both on and off the court. Academically Owens has come a
long way his improved study habits will help him succeed at the Division I
College level.
Owens hopes to continue his college career at a Division
