Softball Spring Training 2018

Warwick, R.I. – March 13, 2018: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team continued play in the Cocoa Beach Spring Training Session at Chain of Lakes Softball complex in Titusville, FL. The Lady Knights faced the Vikings of Itasca Community College from Grand Rapids, MN and then the Archers from St. Louis Community College from St. Louis, MO. CCRI lost to Itasca 12-5 and St. Louis 5-0. With the losses the Lady Knights record falls to 0-4 on the young season.

Game 1: CCRI - 5 Itasca CC - 12

In the circle getting the start for the Lady Knights was Tri-Captian Kailee Morgan (Charlestown, RI) who pitched very well against the vicious Vikings line-up from Itasca CC. The defense for CCRI did not help Morgan as they had six errors on the day which helped the Vikings jump out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Morgan pitched seven strong innings giving up six earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts In her second complete game of the season. She has pitched very well and shown tremendous leadership for her team, though her first two outings have not gone in her favor.

Offensively for the Lady Knights Tri-Captain Kailee Morgan helped her own cause with a single and RBI, a walk and a run scored and Michelle Spremulli (Warwick, RI) had an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Danielle David (West Greenwich, RI) had a double and a walk, freshman Sam Muller (North Stonington, CT) had two walks and an RBI and Hannah Caliri (Pawtucket, RI) added a walk a sacrifice and a run scored. This was a much better game for the Lady Knights offensively but their defense put them in a hole quickly and their bats, though they began to come alive, could not overcome the early deficit.

Game 2: CCRI - 0 St. Louis CC - 5

In the circle for the Lady Knights in the second game of the day was freshman Hannah Caliri who had to face a very potent Archer's squad from St. Louis that had scored 12 runs on CCRI a day earlier. Caliri pitched a gem of a game throwing seven excellent innings allowing only one earned run on five hits, walking three and striking out seven Archer batters. This was the easily the best pitching performance CCRI had in their first four games Unfortunately for CCRI they had no offense to support Caliri's effort.

At the plate for the Lady Knights Tri-Captain Miranda Sasso (Smithfield, RI) went 2-3 with two singles. Also helping CCRI was Hannah Caliri with a single and Michelle Spremulli with a single. After scoring five runs in the first game of the day CCRI's bats went flat beside the four hits as The Archer's Kourtney Timper kept the Lady Knights' offense at bay. It was still another game that saw the Lady Knights improving a working better as a cohesive unit. CCRI's defense and pitching were excellent but it is impossible to win a game if you score no runs.
