Knights Split Doubleheader Against Sussex County

Warwick, R.I. – March 22, 2018: The CCRI Baseball looked to get back to winning ways as they faced off with the Skylanders of Sussex County Community College. Each team took one win away from the day with Sussex victorious in game one, 4-0 and the Knights taking game two 7-1. The split puts CCRI's season record at 3-6.

CCRI – 0 Sussex – 4 (7 Innings)

The Knights were on the wrong side of a man inform in game one. Sussex's Edgardo Matute pitched seven scoreless innings allowing just four hits and no runs. Of those four hits, Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) took two off of him, going 2-3 in the game. The other two hits were split between Joey Barter (Smithfield, RI) and Michael Castillo (Cranston, RI) as they both went 1-3.

CCRI's pitching performance was nothing to scoff at either. Zach D'Andrea (Warwick, RI) threw a six-inning game for the Knights allowing just two earned runs while adding four strikeouts to his tally. The score was 1-0 Skylanders going into the bottom of the fifth were Sussex added two runs. Sussex added one more run in the sixth and saw out the game winning 4-0.

CCRI – 7 Sussex – 1 (7 Innings)

Game two saw the pitching advantage go CCRI's way. Max Marcotte (Coventry, RI) got the start for the Knights. Marcotte threw five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out six batters. This pave the way for the CCRI bats to open up.

The Knights' offense was led by David Mejia (Pawtucket, RI) who batted 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Ray Aponte (East Providence, RI), Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) and Jacob Frost (Cranston, RI) all recorded doubles in game two. Aponte went 1-2 with a run scored and a RBI, McCann batted 1-3 with two RBI and Frost was 1-3 with a run scored. Joseph Barter batted 1-3 with two RBI while Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, RI) knocked in the final CCRI run going 1-4.

The hot CCRI bats scored one and three runs in the second and third innings respectively giving the Knights a 4-0 lead. The fifth inning saw one more run and after the sixth inning ended CCRI held a 7-0 lead. Korey Fijal (Johnston, RI) came into to close out the game, in which he did, throwing one inning, allowing one run while striking out two batters. The Knights would win game two 7-1

UP NEXT: The CCRI Baseball team will face Oakton on Saturday March 17 for the final game of Spring Training.
