Warwick, R.I. – March 19, 2018: The CCRI Baseball team headed down to Orlando, FL to kick off their 2018 season last week. Their first opponent would be the Bears from Mott Community College of Flint, MI. The Knights would go on to split the doubleheader falling in the first game 5-11 and coming out victorious in game 2, 14-2.

CCRI – 5 Mott – 11 (7 Innings)

The Knights looked to start off the 2018 season in style playing a doubleheader in their first full day in Florida for their spring training trip. Offensively the Knights were led by Zach Odsen (Providence, RI) who went 2-3 with a 3-run homer and tallied four RBI. Looking to come back strong after a medical redshirt last year was Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) who tallied a RBI and showed great patience at the plate whilst drawing two walks.

The Knights saw four pitchers take the mound for them in the first outing. Max Marcotte (Coventry, RI) started with one inning, striking out one batter and allowing one earned run. Matt Gutelius (South Kingstown, RI) came in for two and a third innings where he struck out six batters and allowed five earned runs before making way for David Mejia (Pawtucket, RI) who went one and two thirds innings. Mejia didn't allow a single run while also striking out two batters. Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) finished off the game pitching two innings with five strikeouts and allowing two earned runs. Combined, the CCRI hurlers recorded 14 strikeouts in seven innings.

The Knights could not match the intensity at the plate that Mott brought and would fall to the Bears in game one 11-5.

CCRI – 14 Mott – 2 (5 Innings)

Game two had a complete different feel to that of game one as the Knights quite literally came out swinging! In game one the Knights combined for just four hits in seven innings whereas game two saw 10 hits in just five. Leading that charge was Kyle McCann and Jack Frost (Cranston, RI). McCann went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Frost went 2-4 with three RBI with a run scored. Also adding to the score board for the Knights was Justin Brown (Wallingford, CT) who went 1-3 with a double, while knocking in three RBI. Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, RI) and Anthony Padilla (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico) both added doubles of their own, while both driving in a run apiece. Austin Davis went 1-3 with two RBI and Ray Aponte (East Providence, RI) went 1-1 while drawing three walks, scoring three runs and tallying one RBI.

Pitching was also a different story. The Knights enjoyed the strong performance from Zach D'Andrea (Warwick, RI) who picked-up the win going five strong innings allowing just two earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven Bear batters.

The combination of explosive bats and solid pitching saw the Knights defeat the Bears 14-2 in five innings.

UP NEXT: The CCRI Baseball team will face the Academy Baseball of Canada team on Monday March 12.
