Warwick, R.I. – March 22, 2018: The CCRI Baseball looked to bounce back from a doubleheader loss to Heartland as they took on Kirkwood and Dakota County Tech for a Thursday doubleheader. A close first game saw CCRI lose 4-5 to Kirkwood and game two saw Dakota County Tech victorious 9-2 over the Knights. The two losses drop CCRI's season record to 5-2.

CCRI – 4 Kirkwood – 5 (7 Innings)

After a rare day off in their Spring Training Trip, the Knights came back rested and ready for a close battle with the Kirkwood Eagles. The Eagles scored an early run in the top of the first and another in the top of the fourth, taking a 2-0 lead before the CCRI sluggers came good. The Knights would enjoy a 3-run fourth inning, taking a 3-2 lead followed by another run in the fifth to increase that lead to 4-2. Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) lead all Knights with two hits going 2-3 adding one run scored and one RBI. Knocking in the other three runs was David Mejia (Pawtucket, RI) going 1-3 with a double and three RBI.

Pitching held solid as Zach Odsen (Providence, RI) went six plus innings allowing three earned runs off of five hits and striking out six batters. Matt Gutelius (South Kingstown, RI) came in relief, throwing one inning allowing one run.

The Knights held the lead until Kirkwood put together a 3-run seventh inning. CCRI had no answer in the bottom of the seventh and the Eagles took the 5-4 victory.

CCRI – 2 Dakota County Tech – 9 (7 Innings)

The second game of the day pitted the CCRI Knights up against the Blue Knights of Dakota County Tech. CCRI were struggling to find their bats in this game, accumulating four hits in the game. Steve Cochran (Guilford, CT) led the team going 2-4 with a run scored. Austin Davis and Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) each chipped in going 1-3. Whilst Joey Barter (Smithfield, RI) and David Mejia (Pawtucket, RI) recorded one RBI apiece.

On the mound for CCRI was Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, RI) and Asa Nyblom (Wakefield, RI). Grossguth went three innings, allowing five earned runs while striking out five Dakota batters. Nyblom came in to relieve Grossguth in the fourth inning where he pitched near lights out, allowing just one hit and no earned runs while striking out three batters.

Unfortunately CCRI's bats never awoke and the final score saw Dakota County Tech over the Knights 9-2.

UP NEXT: The CCRI Baseball team will face Sussex County for a doubleheader on Friday March 16.
