Lady Knights Succumb to Southern Maine 78-65

Warwick, R.I. – January 8, 2018: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Southern Maine Community College in Portland, ME for a game versus the Seawolves. The Lady Knights lost to the Seawolves 78-65. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 10-7 on the season.

The Lady Knights started slowly as the Seawolves jumped out to an 8-2 lead as they utilized their size advantage to gain the early lead. The Lady Knights battled back to finish out the quarter strongly on the shoulders of sophomore Nia Mims (Bethlehem, PA) who scored 11 points including two 3-pointers to give the Lady Knights a 25-19 lead after one quarter. Southern Maine kept battling and were able to take a 29-28 lead on a basket by Abigale Ramirez. The Lady Knights closed the half out with an 11-6 run to take a 39-35 lead into the halftime break.

CCRI kept grinding as the third quarter began but the Seawolves were building momentum and beginning to establish their post players again as the cut the CCRI lead to just one point by the end of the quarter with the score 56-55 with one quarter remaining. In the final quarter Southern Maine scored the first eight points of the quarter to jump ahead 63-56. The Lady Knights clawed back to tie the game 65-65 on a 3-pointer by Auvi Lindo (Pembroke, Pines, FL) about half way through the quarter but the Seawolves closed the game out with an emphatic 13-0 run to win the game going away by the final count of 78-65.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was sophomore Nia Mims who scored 16 points including three 3-pointers with six rebounds, five assists and two steals and Jada Littlejohn (Providence, RI) who added 14 points with five rebounds. Also having a good game for CCRI was Auvi Lindo who also scored 14 points with four rebounds and three steals, Co-Captain Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain CT) who added nine points, six assists and two steals and Co-Captain Tiondra Hands (Boynton, Beach FL) added seven points and a game-high eight assists. Seawolves’ forward Amanda Brett led all scorers with 23 points.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be this Saturday at 5pm when they will host the Cougars of Genesee Community College from Batavia, NY as part of the 2018 CCRI Invitational.
