Warwick, R.I. – October 11, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team continued on their first New Jersey road trip by traveling to Essex County College in Newark, NJ to play the Wolverines for a noon soccer match. The Lady Knights and Wolverines battled to a 1-1 tie in double overtime! With the tie the Lady Knights record now stands at 6-5-1 overall.
This was a very close and very physical game from the opening whistle through both overtimes. Last year both teams battled with the Wolverines winning in overtime. This game would be just as tense and physical. In the first 20 minutes both teams battled tightly with neither team. However in the 21st minute Mercedes Faust (Warwick, RI) broke into the Essex goal area and was taken down inside the 18 yard box and CCRI was awarded a penalty kick. Head Coach Dennis Grassini sent sophomore Faithe Fernandez (North Providence, RI) to the penalty mark versus Jamaican junior national keeper Shanay Ricketts and Fernandez converted versus the talented Ricketts to give CCRI the 1-0 lead. Seven minutes later Essex knotted the score at 1-1 when Tia Henry scored off a free kick. With five minutes left in the half Mercedes Faust was fouled again inside the 18 yard box by the Keeper Ricketts who received a yellow card. Once again Grassini called upon Fernandez to convert the penalty but she was stopped by rickets this time keeping the score tied at 1-1.
In the second half the intensity and physicality of the game became even more intense with more yellow cards with seven total cards in the game. Both teams were battling hard trying to get the go ahead goal with neither team giving an inch. This intensity would persist through both 10-minute overtime periods with no additional scoring and the game ending in a 1-1 two overtime tie.
Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the game “We are very proud of our team’s performance today. We are especially proud because they rebounded nicely to play better after a subpar performance yesterday. Everyone worked very hard and showed a lot of heart and desire. Their effort today was fantastic following a previous day’s loss and a very short recovery window.”
The Lady Knights have a week off before departing for their second New Jersey road trip when they will play Rowan College at Burlington County Saturday at12noon and Sunday they will travel to the County College of Morris for another game at 12noon.
