Warwick, R.I. – October 24, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team traveled to Montgomery College in Rockville, MD to play a tri-match versus the Raptors of Montgomery College and the Eagles of Wake Tech from Raleigh, NC. The Lady Knights defeated the Raptors 3-2 but then fell to the Eagles 1-3. With the Tri-match split the Lady Knights are now 19-4 on the season.

Lady Knights defeat Montgomery College: 22-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-16 & 15-9

Head Coach Sam Amaral commented on the tumultuous first match “This game was a roller coaster ride the entire time. I knew the girls were tired from the eight hour ride to Maryland but I didn't expect them to play the way they did the first two games.” After the first two games Coach Amaral made an adjustment to have Tri-Captain Amanda LaCroix (East Freetown, MA) shift over to start setting for the CCRI. She is an extremely versatile player and leader willing to do anything for her team. The adjustment paid off as the Lady Knights as a unit started to play better and pass better. Coach Amaral added “I was proud of the girls to be able to lose two games and win the last three. The takes passion, heart, hard work, and sacrifice.” LaCroix finished with eight kills, 18 assists and 12 digs also helping the Lady Knights was freshman outside hitter Melanie Diaz (New Bedford, MA) who had nine kills and 26 digs while sophomore middle hitter Alexis Mirabile (Cranston, RI) was a big player in the front row getting seven kills and seven blocks.

Lady Knights lose to Wake Tech: 20-25, 15-25, 25-21 & 15-25

Wake Tech is a very strong team with three very strong hitters. Rasheena Mansel in particular gave the Lady Knights a run for their money. Coach Amaral and her staff, made some adjustments which helped in game three but Wake Tech was very quick to spot the adjustments it and adapt their game as well. Coach Amaral commented after the match “Losing this match was very hard for our players as it was their last regular season match. However, I was very happy to have our ladies play such an amazing team right before the District Tournament. This just gave them extra motivation to get back home to practice and get ready for the best teams in the district.” Amanda LaCroix finished the match with eight kills, 11 assists and 15 digs. Dahlia Rafael-Tirado (Warwick, RI) finished with 19 assist and four digs. Melanie Diaz had 10 kills and 13 digs. Rounding out the Lady Knights top performers was Tri-Captain Mackenzie Easterbrooks (Plainville, MA) who had 16 digs while Carol Rodriguez (Pawtucket, RI) had 12 kills and three blocks.

The Lady Knights now focus their attention to the District L Championship which they will be hosting the weekend of November 5 th-6 th! The Lady Knights (19-4) will host two teams from Region XIX which are still to be determined (looks like it will probably be Delaware Tech (23-3) and Harcum 13-9)) and Ulster County (12-6) who will be the representative from Region XV.
