Warwick, R.I. – November 9, 2016: the CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Bulldogs of Bunker Hill Community College from Charlestown, MA on Tuesday form their home opener. The Lady Knights easily handled the Bulldogs 75-28. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in Region XXI play.
The Lady Knights started the game with a very hot shooting touch from 3-point land. More specifically, Ashley VanBemmelen (North Providence, RI) was on fire! She made her first four 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the gam to give CCRI a quick 12-4 lead. Co-Captain Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, CT) also joined the long range shooting barrage by making a 3-pointer while Center Dionna Jackson (Harriston, MS) established a low post presence with five first quarter points to help the Lady Knights go into the first quarter break with a comfortable 29-7 lead. In the second quarter D’Asia Allen (Providence, RI) heated up from long range with two 3-pointers while getting help from her teammates as they increased their lead to 43-14 by halftime.
In the third quarter Co-Captain Mackenzie Brayman (North Stonington, CT) led the Lady Knights with six points with a few of mid-range jumpers and was helped by Tiondra Hands (Delray Beach, FL) who sank a 3-pointer to help CCRI extend their lead to 58-22. The Lady Knights cruised in the fourth quarter with help from two 3-pointers from D’Asia Allen and one from Kelsey Hernandez to win by the final count of 75-28.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Ashley VanBemmelen with 16 points including four 3-pointers on 4-5 from beyond the arc with four rebounds and three assists followed by D’Asia Allen with 14 points also with four 3-pointer and 4-5 from beyond the arc with eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. Also having a big game was Co-Captain Kelsey Hernandez with 15 points, three rebounds and four steals and Co-Captain Mackenzie Brayman added 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. Rounding out the top performers was Tiondra Hands with seven points, six assists and six steals and Dionna Jackson added seven points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The next game for the Lady Knights will be this Friday the 11th when they travel to Essex County College in Newark, NJ for a game that starts at 5pm.
