Warwick, R.I. – November 19, 2016: The CCRI Knights Men’s Basketball team traveled to Branchburg, New Jersey to participate in the Raritan Valley Fall Classic tournament this past weekend. The Knights’ first game was against tournament hosts Raritan Valley CC on Friday night at 8PM. The Knights came out strong and fought to a 14 point victory over the Lions 83-69. The Knights record improved to 2-1 overall on the season after the victory, and stayed at 1-1 for Region XXI play.
Coming into the game, Head Coach Rick Harris put an emphasis on defense. Raritan Valley has a potent offensive attack, which was averaging 98 points per game to start the season. Coach Harris deployed a strong zone strategy that was able to hold the Lions’ offense to 69 points, 29 under their average. The strong defensive play allowed the Knights to transition swiftly into offense and to create many scoring chances. Elijah Vazquez (Woonsocket, RI) scored a team-high 22 points while going 5 of 10 on 3-pointers. Edvaldo Ferreira (Praia, Cape Verde) had an impressive game on both ends of the floor. Ferreira contributed offensively with an impressive double-double scoring 16 points while making six shots and scoring all of his free throws with 16 rebounds and five blocked shots on the defensive end.
The Knights led the game from start to finish, never surrendering the lead to Raritan Valley. Coach Harris was very happy with the team’s performance on Friday night, and was prepared for the next game of the tournament on Saturday versus Rockland.
